Chapter 1 : Grace

I mumble an incoherent tune as I press my headphones against my ears. I bump into more than a few people on the way who dare to give me furious grumbles. I shake my head as I give them a aggressive smile, making them abruptly move back.

I bump into my friend, Aston who punches me playfully on my shoulder. I give him a glare and he puts his hands up in the air. I take my headphones out and groan when the headset falls to the ground.

"Skipping class again?" He sneered, making me smile.

"Please." I replied, trying not to mess up. "I'm obviously going to, second period sci- no, ma-," I trailed off, and Aston smirked.

"You haven't even memorized your schedule?" He says, exasperated, as his dusk, dusty brown eyes scrutinize my baby blue eyes.

"Grace, it's already second semester." I looked at him, motioning for him to continue.

We started at each other in perfect synchronization for seconds, until a distasteful, uncomfortable silence falls among us. I start to put my headphones back on when he stops me.

"You've been skipping class so often, you can't tell your first class from your second." He says, and although I can see his concern, I dismiss it fast.

I shoo him away. "You're no fun, Dad." I say, crossing my arms. He gives me a sad smile and sighs desperately, beads of sweat dripping down his forehead.

He walks away and I feel a pang of loneliness as I walk outside the doors to the forest behind the school. The fresh wind hits me hard, as the evergreens whispering sounds of nature. The sun beams on my black hair, lighting up half of my face.

I sit here and wonder about how much Aston changed over the summer. Last year, he'd be begging me to come with me, to escape school.

Suddenly, I hear the door swing open, and my shoulders tense up. I then hear the door coming to a intense, aggressive close. It slams shut as my eyes meet with his.

Then I hear a gunshot.

And I know, I am not safe.
