Dear diary,
I've made a mistake. I'm sick of being ridiculed and spat on in the streets but is stopping that worth risking my life? My mum thinks I should go. I saw the film of the Somme. Apparently it was a victory. Both my brothers were killed. A victory. What a load of bullshit. I can't believe they died and now I'm going to let myself rot in a trench. I don't believe the letters my brothers sent home. The black lines give it away. I ---- like it here. You fill in the gap. A four letter word that they cover to make it seem nice.
I wonder what France is like. Or at least what it was like. My brothers gave me a secret note not to come. I don't want to betray them. I love my brothers. They were twins. 6ft tall with brown hair and a chiseled jaw. I was often over shadowed by them but they protected me. If someone messed with one of us they messed with all of us. We all loved each other. We protected our mother. Dad left when I was 2. She worked what ever job she could get. When we were allowed to my brothers and I worked in a shoe shop. We were paid well and enjoyed it. When the war started and my brothers volunteered I was left making shoes for the soldiers. The owner and I became friends. He didn't ridicule me like others did. He was nice. I liked work. When I told him I was signing up he said to be careful and write to him. I'll miss him and my mother. I leave tomorrow.
You are my new friend now. I'll write when I can and as much as I can and if I die, tell everyone my story. I hope it's a good one.
