Korriban was harsh, to the others. For the Sith Pureblood slave, Skarro, not so much. Skarro's facial features were smoother than most of his fellows, and apparently this was favored by his human masters. Every punishment for his 'mistakes' was enacted on his fellow students and this did not go unnoticed by Skarro--in fact, he abused it, often.

The slaves' work was mainly archaeological, digging for artifacts for the Imperial Reclamation Service who were there in name only, the actual overseers were Sith of course. Skarro had a knack for finding these artifacts but he didn't make this obvious. He would often try to decipher them himself, if he was successful, he would turn them in; if not, he would destroy them--knowing full well the others would be punished. Gradually his deciphering skills improved and he got quite adept at learning the secrets that he found, but his overseers never knew this--Skarro only ever turned in a fixed amount. If he found a particularly useful morsel of knowledge, he would destroy it after learning it.
As far as the Force goes, the young slave seemed no more force sensitive than a pelko bug, like his fellow slaves. This was soon found to be otherwise.
Through his ventures in the tombs, something unlocked inside of Skarro. He soon manifested considerable, but raw, force abilities. This was unexpected, but welcome, but he kept these abilities secret...or tried to. He often practiced his abilities on the other slaves while they were down in the tombs, when they returned to the surface the overseers would notice the wounds...not many things in a tomb could cause burn marks.
The instructors learned of his abilities, both by the nature of injuries the other slaves and by sensing the innate power in Skarro. However, they chose to keep Skarro in place and kept things as they were, they viewed him as a good 'motivator' to the other slaves--they were just as afraid of him as they were of the overseers.
Skarro, now established as 'prime stock', for his force abilities and his favored facial features, was mated with a female--another Sith Pureblood slave who also had 'favorable features.' The overseers' plan was to have the child raised as Sith (after determining Force abilities of course) while leaving Skarro in his slave position. This plan didn't last long.
