(Y/N) picked at the black cuff of her top. It was something she did when she was bored. Looking over the tops of her knees, she saw the sun beginning its descent down, like it was going to sink into the blue lake. The setting sun painted the sky around it bright reds and oranges, its reflection on the lake just as a magnificent. (Y/N) watched, with her arms across her knees, resting her head on her arms. She sighed, wishing every second of the day could be this peaceful. Finding it hard to breath, with the position pushing her black choker in to her neck, she took it off, her fingers tracing the spider on its web. The black haired girl with (f/c) streaks put it gently on the grassy hill, her dark (e/c) eyes going back to watch the dying sun’s last rays.
Her eyes were half closed, ready to drift off into slumber when she heard the footsteps. Cursing herself for letting her guard down, (Y/N) leapt up, turning around to face the enemy. She knew that with the sun behind her, they wouldn't know who she was.
“Easy now, I ain’t gonna hurt ya!” Gajeel told her, his arms up in a surrender pose. (Y/N) relaxed her stance, realising it was just a member of her new Guild. Gajeel walked closer to her, (Y/N) never taking her eyes of him, wary he may try to attack her. Standing beside her, he noticed that her guard was still up.
“I ain’t gonna hurt you, if that’s watcha thinking,” Gajeel assured her. He sat down, just as the last fragment of the sun disappeared. He rested his arms on his raised knees, sitting in the position she had been sitting in previously. (Y/N) sat slowly back down, lowering herself cautiously, ready to jump into a battle stance if he tried to attack her. Gajeel just watched her with his red eyes.
“They musta put ya through something, the way you’re acting, like a frightened bird,” Gajeel remarked. (Y/N) relaxed completely, knowing he wasn’t going to hurt her. She mirrored how he sat, both looking out to the lake.
“Yeah, I guess they did. But I always thought that’s normal in a guild, being pushed around, bullied and attacked by your friends. I only realised it was wrong when I saw the way Fairy Tail fought. They fought not for themselves, but for their friends, to help and to protect the people they hold dearest to them. Your bond... it’s stunning, you really are a family,” (Y/N) told him quietly, remembering the fight her old and new guild had four days ago. She had fought bravely, but had been defeated. She had looked on as the Ace of her guild, and the Master got defeated by Fairy Tail.
She had been flabbergasted, completely astonished when they had asked her to join them, saying they had seen the way she had fought for her Guild, her comrades. They wanted her to join them, as they wanted to show her what being in a Guild actually felt like. They had felt sorry for her, when they had found out about the way she had been treated. The fact that they had been abusing her, had driven Natsu to defeat her Guild.
(Y/N) had been the only one from her guild to become a member of Fairy Tail, and all her comrades from her old Guild, had called her a traitor. She had spent most of the time since becoming a member of Fairy Tail outside watching the days past. (Y/N) still felt like an intruder, someone who didn't belong in the guild, and kept quiet. She couldn't believe that all the other members had accepted her without any complaints. She had been their enemy, her Guild had attacked members of their Guild, their family, and yet they had let her in.
“Yeah, I didn’t understand why they let me in either,” Gajeel told her, knowing what she was thinking. Raising her eyebrows, (Y/N) motioned for him to continue.
“I used to be in the guild called Phantom Lord. We hurt a team of three badly, yet they still let me and Juvia in. I like Fairy Tail much more. We’re more of a family, my pain is their pain, and their problems are my problems. I’m closer to them, and I think of them as my friends, comrades and family. Soon you will think of them like that too,” He told the girl. Her eyes sparkled with joy, liking the sound of having a family.
Gajeel, upon seeing her eyes shine with delight, was shocked. He always thought that her eyes were naturally dull, because of the hardship she had endured by the hands of her fellow guild mates. His anger boiled at the thought of someone hurting their teammate, especially a girl. Although he knew (Y/N) was strong, she had been an S class mage in her old Guild, and had given Erza a run for her money.
“I think I like the sound of that,” (Y/N) whispered quietly, looking up at the dark blue sky. It was twilight, and the stars had began to appear, waking up from their sleep. “I’ve never had a family before.”
“We’ll be the family you never had, (Y/N), and we’ll do a better job than your actual family. You don’t need them, not when you have Fairy Tail,” he promised her, looking up at the night sky. He glanced at the girl dressed all in black, her fringe over her eyes. Everything about (Y/N) screamed darkness, her clothing told everyone that she was emo or goth. Gajeel knew better. She used Shadow Magic, only more complex than the others he had seen use it, back in Raven Tail. She could trap people in shadows, control their movements with their own shadows, and she could also teleport using them.
“Cheer up, things are becoming brighter! They started looking up the moment your Guild attacked ours,” he told her, trying to get her to smile. (Y/N) chewed her black lips.
“No one in my old Guild accepted me for me. They didn't like the fact I wore all black, even when I told them it helped me with my magic. Anyone I tried to get close to, to become friends with, shunned me, they hated me, hated that I looked like an emo. They called me a freak, who didn't deserve friends, family or even love. The worst part was that I believed them, and I still kinda do,” (Y/N) admitted to him. When Gajeel heard that, his fists clenched. She didn't deserve to go through this pain, this agony.
Placing a hand below her chin, he gently turned her head from the night sky to face him. Leaning in slowly so he didn't scare her, he placed his lips lightly on her lips. Her eyes widened, shutting soon afterwards. Her arms reached up to lock behind his neck, his other hand coming up to hold her left shoulder.
“You deserve so much more than that. They dragged you down, hurt you because they were jealous of your power, of your skill. Don’t ever believe them for a second, got that?” He told her, leaning his forehead on to hers.
