It was my first day of elementary school. Today was a day for alot of new things. New school, moving to a new neighbourhood and a new life. I had been very nervous but I wore the prettiest dress ever. It was my favourite and not only because it was the prettiest of it's kind that I had left but pa had given it to me before he died. Mom had thrown away most of my clothes after he died. The other children had been nice and a boy had even shared his pencil with me since Mom hadn't bought me any. Mom constantly reassured me Daddy was in a better place, a place she called heaven. That's where my Daddy was she said. I had begged her so many times to let me visit him in heaven but she would only cry more than usual before locking me in my room. I was confused, if heaven was such a good place I wanted to go there and see pa too. I told Mommy she could tag along and she had sobbed into my pink princess blouse, her body trembling as I used my pudgy six year old fingers to comfort her by running them through her hair like she would do when I was upset the day Daddy went to heaven. After a while of her crying I went into the fridge getting her special drink for her. She said it was medicine and it always made her feel better. I wanted to make her feel better. Pulling the fridge open I brought it to her, the cold stinging my little fingers.
She'd drank until she eventually fell asleep with my hand still massaging her hair. I'd coverred her with a blanket before trudging to my small bed to get some sleep. In the morning mommy would be fine and maybe heaven would not turn out to be so great and daddy would return too.
