"Half of our group is gone," Hayley realized. "What are we gonna do? You always save my skin at the last minute."
"Don't worry," Sarah assured, "I've got it."
With only twenty minutes left on the clock, the two girls had a lot of hats to wear with the other pair gone. It seemed like a lot of time, but seventh period is when every class in the entire school would get crazy - especially in home ec class. Therefore, it would be hard and important to stay on task.
Luckily, Sarah had a secret cookie recipe going back seven generations that was absolutely foolproof. Since the class was given a Chopped type of challenge, her creativity would help her adapt the recipe and win the "judges" over.
By the way, the judges were literally just the home ec teacher and three volunteers in class.
After twenty full minutes of Sarah being a boss and Hayley freaking out, the taste test was finally on.
"Sarah's group," the teacher announced, "you're up."
Hayley passed out a few cookies to the judges, and you could see the students' exhausted eyes flutter awake. The teacher remained stoic, but what teacher would actually show much interest in the students being decent in class?
"Actually quite impressive for you youngsters," the teacher muttered. "Next."
Several importantly insignificant entries later, it was finally determined who would take home the... bragging rights. In half agreed-upon excitement, the class awaited the verdict.
"And the winner of this contest is..."
Wait for it.
Wait for it.
Wait.
Please hurry up, lady!
3, 2, 1...
"Sarah and Hayley's group," the teacher said quickly. "Now remember, kids. Everyone won this contest in their own way and it was really hard to decide the winner."
Before any more could be said, the dismissal bell resounded through the halls, almost encouraging the building to empty soon.
~
That was ten years ago, as of last week.
Ever since that day in eighth grade, Hayley had been pestering Sarah about her cookies almost every day. She would run by her house and ask her to give the recipe, only for her to tell her it's a well guarded family secret. The whole thing got to the point where it was almost a meme.
Sarah's family's cookies were a surprisingly sensitive topic, and it got really annoying to have Hayley begging for her recipe after school, and work later on in life. However, it was understandable for her not to mean anything by it, and she even told her it was a kudos for saving her in that class.
An attention-hogging part of herself, no matter how tiny, liked her creation being over-appreciated.
Speaking of the cookies, Sarah decided she would make some. So she grabbed two bowls and a few large spoons as she started to gather ingredients.
Meanwhile, Hayley had been watching from the window. Creepy, but it was also as close as she would get without being found out. Her roommate seemed unfazed, so she slowly creaked the window open and slid under her bed.
Sarah turned her head briefly, but thankfully didn't see her. Swiftly, Hayley crawled under Sarah's bed, which was right next to hers. She would have gotten further, but the coarse sound of flesh meeting the rug floors was enough for her to earn her roommate's undivided attention.
