Chapter 1
The alarm on my phone buzzed and the vibration shook my bed slightly. My room was lit by the rising sun that shone through my white curtains. As my eyes opened, I turned off my phone and rolled over on my back. The thought of me having to go to school made me want to curl up under my covers and hide. "Knock knock" I heard my mom whisper from the doorframe.
"Come on Kristina, get up" she said gently as she rubbed her hand softly on my thigh.
I groaned in reply, this meaning I didn't want to wake up or go anywhere at all.
I felt my bed sink in a bit. My mom was sitting on my bed with her small hand outlining my waist. " I know you going to school is hard since your dad died" she said with a hint of sympathy in her voice. "It's not hard, it sucks" I explained " Every time I step foot on that campus all I get are people staring and dirty looks like I had something to do with it... you don't get it...people think I killed dad" I sobbed in my pillow. My mom sighed, giving me a soft kiss on the cheek. "Come on get ready for school" she finally said after a minute of silence. I peeked up from my pillow, watching her leave the room. I sighed heavily, rolled off my bed, and started to get ready.
After I was finished getting myself ready, I kissed my mom goodbye and rushed out the door. I walked down the driveway to grab my bike off the edge of the street. "Kris" I heard a familiar voice call me from the other side of the street. I looked up and smiled as my best friend Luca rushed over to me with his bike. "Hey Luca" I said with a warm smile. Luca is the only friend I have. I've known him since pre-school and from then he's always been around, we are completely inseparable. Ever since my dad died, he is still the only one there for me. He knows I didn't kill him, but no one else believed me.
Luca and I rode down the street of our neighborhood, approaching school. Bridgeview High School, home of the Bridgeview Bobcats, population 250,000 students, and all eyes on the girl that killed her father. As Luca and I walked up the stairs to enter campus, something bright caught the corner of my eye. Turning slowly, all eyes that stared at me followed where my head was going. Nothing. In the corner of my eye I saw something, but as I turned completely, I saw nothing. Despite not seeing anything, I felt like something was happening, like something was coming, something big.
Chapter 2
My stomach was in knots, I felt everyone's eyes watching me, even Luca's. "Hey, you okay Kris?" I heard Luca ask, lightly nudging me with his shoulder. "Huh, oh yeah, I'm okay" I replied. Before Luca could say anything else, something caught my attention. The sky became a bit dark, but the sun still shone. I looked up in enough time to see something blocking the sun. It looked like a bird. It was beautiful. It flew away from the sun, but even with it moving it was bright like fire. In fact, it looked like that was what the bird was made of. It flew close to me. Close enough for me to feel the heat from her burning flames on my skin. The bird flew in circles around me. It's flying looked so effortless and beautiful. In a strange way, I felt safe, protected, and like all my troubles were gone. I was fixated on the birds flying as it spun faster and faster around me. Suddenly, without a moment of hesitation, it stopped in front of me. Her wings spreading open, bright and beautiful. Her beak opened slowly and a yellow spark escaped her mouth. It was as easy as breathing, the spark entered my mouth as if I were consuming food. My heart raced, things felt strange. I closed my eyes, taking in everything that had just happened. Being so fixated by the bird, I had almost forgotten how to breathe. When I reopened my eyes, it was as if nothing happened at all. The bird was gone, but everyone continued to stare, like I was crazy. It was like waking from a dream, not knowing where you were, or who was around. My eyes met with the other people that were watching. I didn't realize how many people stopped to watch what was happening. Did they see what I saw? Or was I just as crazy as before, or worse, even crazier. Luckily, the bell ringing for first period rang. This broke everyone's staring as they all quickly rushed to class. Luca grabbed me by the arm, hurrying me down the hall. "What happened out there Kris?" I heard Luca ask. "I don't know" I replied almost breathlessly. I started to feel light-headed, the room began to spin, and I had this burning sensation creep into my stomach. The burning went from moderate to completely unbearable. I clutched my stomach, sank to the floor, and screamed in agonizing pain. "Kris" I heard Luca's voice yell in worry "KRISTINA" he yelled before I saw nothing but darkness. Within a matter of seconds, I could hear people rushing outside, the floor pounding from under me, but all I felt was burning. My eyes slowly opened, still feeling light- headed. Then I saw her. The beautiful bird circling around me, the fire in her tail as bright as before. "Fire" I whispered softly as my eyes began to close again. I began to reach my hand out to touch her, but then the burning started again, this time I was able to handle it. My arm still extended, I waved my hand a bit, signaling for Luca to help me up. As he lifted me up, his hand still held mine, but I was nowhere near the floor. My eyes glanced down at the floor for a moment, then up to the group of people who were just watching me suffer. They all looked at me astonished. "Luca" I whispered "How are you keeping me up here? Get me down" I said grunting the words between my teeth. "That's the thing Kris, I can't" he whispered innocently. "What do you mean you can't, what are you talking about?" I questioned. "You're going to find this hard to believe, but you have wings" he said clearing his throat. I turned around to look at them, and sure enough, there were bright orange and yellow flames for wings fanned out behind me. I let go of Luca's hand as I floated to the floor. I turned to face everyone behind me, they all jumped away from me with worried expressions. Their eyes glancing at me and the onto my wings. No one's expression changed, everyone stayed silent, and I felt worried. I looked up. She was gone, the beautiful Bird of Fire was nowhere to be seen. My heart fluttered and with that, so did my wings. Everyone cleared a path for me as I quickly flew down the hallway. I had no idea where I was going, but I just knew I needed to get out of that school.
