Sometimes, you find what you need when it's least convenient. Life has a funny way of making things that should be easy, really really hard. These were the thoughts running through my head during Mrs. Harrison's 3rd period class on February 5th, which turned out to be a very significant day.

"Kane, um..." Whispered my best friend, Jonathon Locke.

"Huh? Yeah, what?"

Jonathon nudged his head towards the front of the room, where I found Mrs. Harrison looking at me, eyebrows raised.

"Oh... did you ask me something Mrs. Harrison."

"Yes, as a matter of fact I did, maybe if you had been paying attention you would have known that." She said with a look of irritation.

"I'm sorry." I said looking down at my desk.

"Yes, well anyways..."

She continued to lecture and once again my thoughts drifted far, far away from that classroom at Westview High. I was brought back to reality by the ringing of the lunch bell. I grabbed my bag and Jonathan and I walked out of the classroom. He was really all I had, we've been friends since the 4th grade. Neither of us have ever really "fit in" at school. I had curly black hair and bright blue eyes, I wore pretty much nothing but flannels, and my backpack had so many holes in it, it could hardly be called a backpack anymore. Jonathan was gay, so people at my school didn't really talk to him, and when they did, their sentences always seem to contain the word "faggot". Neither of us were bad-looking, at least I don't think. I play lacrosse so I'm pretty fit, and Jonathan is on the swim team, so he's built pretty well. We're just not societies standards of "cool". We were walking through the hallway, debating on whether or not we should go skating after school or not, when I saw her. Julia Andrews, platinum blonde hair, with deep brown eyes. She was just as beautiful as always.

"Excuse me Jon..." I said making a bee-line towards Julia.

"Oh, okay, yeah no just leave me here! Its fine!" He yelled as I was walking away.

"Julia, hey..." I shyly spoke.

"Kane, not today." she said walking slightly quicker now.

"Please, let me try to change your mind, take me back, I'm begging. You know I never would have left you if my mom hadn't made me, and now she's out of the picture! We can be together again!"

She spun around sharply, making me stop in my tracks. "Kane Elliot, how many times do I have to tell you? No, we are never getting back together. If you loved me the way you said you did, you would've fought for me, you wouldn't have let anyone get in the way of us, not even your mom. Now get the hell away from me before I start screaming." She exclaimed.

Julia turned back around and continued walking, leaving me, and my broken heart, in the middle of the hallway. I walked away glumly and made my way towards the music room. Jonathan and I ate our lunch in there, so we could stay as far away from high school drama as possible. I entered the room, the smell of dusty, unused instruments filling my nose, and slumped down on a chair next to Jonathan.

"Struck out again?" He questioned

"Big time." I sighed

"Why are you still even trying? Shes a bitch anyways."

"Shes not a bitch, shes amazing. Shes the only girl that ever took interest in me, and I blew it. Over what? A stupid argument my mom and I had? Thank god my mom left. Her and my dad were always screaming anyways."

"I don't know man, Julia didn't do anything for you. Maybe you should just adopt my lifestyle and be gay."

I chuckled, "I don't think that's something you can choose."

"This whole school seems to think it is."

"Fuck this school."

"I'll toast to that." Said Jonathan raising his milk carton in the air.

I laughed and tapped mine against it. The rest of the day seemed to go in slow motion, I just wanted to go home so I could get the thought of Julia out of my head. Finally, the end of the day rolled around. I said goodbye to Jonathan and walked down the front steps of the school. Thats when I noticed it. A dark brown bun sticking up from behind a bush. I raised one eyebrow, and walked over to the bush. I walked around it to find a girl peering through the leaves. I tapped on her shoulder.

"Oh!" She jumped and turned around.

I got a better look at her, she had course brown hair, and tan skin, with hazel eyes. She looked like she was of Hawaiian decent. Her cheeks were rosy and her lips were plump and pink. Her eyelashes were long, truly displaying the color of her eyes.

"What are you doing?" She yelled.

"What am I doing? What are you doing? I'm not the one peering through a bush."

"Okay so we're going to play that game?"

"I'm just stating facts."

"Well, smart guy, maybe you shouldn't sneak up on people like that."

"Maybe I'll consider it if you tell me why you're spying on the school through a bush."

"Okay, I guess that's fair. I'm starting here soon and I'm just trying to see what the people here look like."

"You felt the need to do that through a bush?"

"Er, well, I guess I didn't need to... That's none of your business!" She said as she started speed walking away in frustration.

"Wait, whats your name?" I yelled to her.

"Also none of your business!" She yelled back without even turning to look at me.

I chuckled and smirked. This girl was interesting, I was excited to see what else she would bring to Westview.
