He was running, running away from the horrors what was once his home. He could still remember his parents and brother's cruel words, their angry expressions. Their words saying he was worthless and a good for nothing boy, he still felt his father's whip cracking down on his now scarred hands. He wiped away the tears streaming down his dirt-streaked face, feet pounding against the melting snow, tripping over a fallen tree trunk, he grunted in pain. Not even bothering to wipe of his now mud stained clothes he stood up and realized his ankle was now broken. He started to hobble down the slippery path as best as he could trying to get away from the place he once called home. However, the pain in his foot was now becoming unbearable and he collapsed, trying to catch his breath he closed his eyes and tried to stop the new flow of tears that were renewed from the emotional and physical pain he had just endured. He starts to examine his leg, his ankle was now black and blue, and in desperate need of medical attention. He stopped examining his leg when he heard the most beautiful singing. Looking through the grove of trees that were behind him, he saw a girl around his age doing the most incredible things he had ever seen. Her blonde hair glistened in the sunlight appearing as though it was shining, adorning her hair were the brightest wild flowers he had ever seen, her faded blue cloak went along perfectly with the bright yellow sunflowers that she seemed to be summoning from the ground, but that wasn't even the most extraordinary thing about her. There were at least six or seven wild animals and birds of all different kinds surrounding her seeming to be drawn to her. Ignoring the pain in his leg, he gasped at the sight of it all. The girl immediately stopped singing, she and all the animals became quiet and looked his way as he started seeing spots in his vision. Before he fell unconscious he could see her fading figure walking towards him hurriedly, becoming frightened he quickly backed away, but not before he blacked out. He awoke covered up in a soft wool blanket, with warmth and the aroma of fresh baked bread surrounding him. He sat up carefully and noticed the pain in my leg was gone. Startled pulled off the blanket and with great surprise realized his ankle was no longer black and blue. He looked up and realized he was in a cottage-like structure. "Would you like some tea?". Startled he fell out of the bed he was in, he stood up quickly and sheepishly looked up. The girl he saw in the woods before he passed out, was now looking at him with a concerned look on her face, holding a raspberry smelling cup of tea. He nodded slowly, and cautiously took the cup of tea before and sat down at the tree stump looking table with, huge oversized mushrooms as stools. She smiled brightly and went back to the fire where the bread seemed to be. "I bet your hungry too, huh?" she asked. He nodded feverishly. She laughed and brought the bread to the table and set it down in front of him. He hadn't realized how hungry he was until now, it'd been two days since he'd last eaten. She cut the bread and handed him a slice, he bit into and almost groaned in delight, raisin his favorite. When he'd finished his bread and tea, she was staring at him curiously. He raised an eyebrow, she chuckled. "Sorry, I'm just trying to figure you out, do you mind if I ask you some questions?". He finished chewing and shrugged. " Okay, so what's your name, how old are you, why are you here and how did you trip?" She asked in a rush. "You sure do ask a lot of questions." He countered. "Sorry. I tend to get carried away a lot" she said sheepishly. He chucked to himself. "I'm Peter... just Peter, I'm 16, and tripped because I was running and didn't see the tree trunk, and I'd rather not say why I'm here..." he said quietly. "Oh, the tree says he feels terrible by the way." She said lost in thought. "What?" He said a little bit skeptical. "Oh sorry, never mind" she said shaking her head as to clear her thoughts. "Well Peter... just a Peter if you don't have a place to stay you can stay here I have to go back to my family's farm soon before it gets dark, it's right across the hill there" she said pointing through the window at the snow covered hill. "I'll be back tomorrow morning with breakfast, but if you get hungry there's some food in the cupboards and a well right out front". "Thank you!" He said shocked by her kindness. "No problem" She smiled. She turned to walk out the
door , "Wait, I didn't catch your name" he said. "Emma, my name's Emma.".
