The asteroid was hurtling straight toward earth....and no one knew about it.
14 year old gamer, Lucas Mast, was sitting at his desk with his eyes glued to his computer screen. He had been in this same spot since noon and it was now 4 in the afternoon. He was entranced by the zombie game that was flashing on his screen, so when a giant rock hit his window he barely noticed. He looked up for a split second and saw a spider web of cracks across his window. Shocked, he got up, grabbed his shoes and sprinted outside. He eyes burned from the sun light. When his vision cleared he saw a blue orb shooting through the sky. It got bigger and bigger by the minute. There was only one person who would know what this was.
Five minutes later he was six blocks away, out of breath, and on Kira's porch, his best friend. He knocked on the door and she answered.
"Hey Lucas! What's up? You look like you just ran a marathon."
"You are the biggest sci-fi geek I know-"
"Is that an insult or a compliment?"
"Forget about that," Lucas said, "What is that thing in the sky? It got way bigger since the first time I saw it."
"It's an asteroid! This is bad!"
"Don't those things like destroy planets and stuff? Because, if so, then we are totally screwed."
"Yes. That is what wiped out the dinosaurs!"
Kira turned and ran inside and up the stairs. Lucas followed right behind her. She yanked open her bedroom door and sprinted to her desk. She pulled a small gold key from the top drawer and opened the biggest drawer in the desk. From the drawer she pulled a spiral bound notebook.
"What's that?" Lucas asked.
"You like video games, I like to research," Kira said, with a mischievous grin.
She opened the notebook to a neon green post-it note that said "Asteroids." The entire page was full of handwritten notes, printed out pictures and different colored highlights. She scanned the page until she found the line that she needed. It was highlited with blue and had a picture next to it of the thing in the sky.
"What is that thing?" Lucas asked pointing to the picture of the blue asteroid.
"It doesn't have a name. It has only been seen once before."
"So, that means no one knows what this is?" Lucas asked, his voice rising in terror.
"Yeah. More or less," Kira said flipping the notebook back to the first page. In neon yellow writing was a phone number and the word "NASA."
"You have NASA's phone number? You never told me that you had their phone number!"
"It was never important, until now," she said, spookily. She quickly picked up her cell phone and typed in the number at lightning speed. The phone only rang about two times when some one answered. Lucas could only hear one side of the conversation.
"I would like to report a siting of an unidentifyed object...Yes, it is a blue sphere. It is displayed on your website under asteroids...It has gotten about two times larger during this conversation...What do you mean you can't do anything about it?... You are just going to let this thing crash into the earth and destroy us all?" Kira suddenly hung up the phone. Her face was red from anger.
"We have to get to the basement!" She shouted as se ran out of her room, down the stairs, through the kitchen, and to a door that I assumed was her basement. She continued running, not giving Lucas a chance to react to what had just happened. She paused at the foot of the stairs waiting for Lucas to catch up. When he reached her she continued to sprint to other side of the basement. She pulled down a big Star Wars poster to reveal a metal door.
"What the heck is that?" Lucas said when he saw the door.
"It's my asteroid bunker," Kira said it as if she had just told Lucas the weather, "Get in and get into the corner. Lucas hurried in and huddled into the corner. He looked like a scared baby animal.
Five minutes had passed by and Lucas was still huddled in the corner. Kira was reading a book like today was like any other day. Suddenly, there was a loud screaming sound. It wasn't human. It sounded like a kettle that had just began to boil. Then without warning a loud boom sounded. The shelter colapsed on top of them. And there was only darkness around him.
Then Lucas woke up. He sat bolt upright in his bed. His tv was still playing an alien movie that he fell asleep watching. That explained his weird dream. He got out of bed still shaky and sweaty from his dream. He looked out his window. There was no blue orb hurtling toward him and the Earth.
"Thank goodness. No phone calls to NASA today," Lucas said to himself and he walked out of his room.
