Chapter 1
I look out the passenger window glaring. In the rear - view mirror I see my mom, Janis, says something.
"What?" She replied, attitude laced through her voice as she ripped one ear bud out.
"I said what's wrong. "
"Oh you already know what's wrong" she refuses to meet her mother's gaze though the rear view mirror.
"I know you didn't want to move but this place is better. The beach here is so pretty here in North Carolina." Her voice softens as she tries to plead with her daughter.
"But I like Minnesota. That's where Jack is." Lilah's voice trails off as she pauses her music and takes the other ear bud out.
"Honey you need to forget jack. Ever since you had a crush on him you've been nothing but trouble"
"Yea right mom. Anyway where is dad?"
Lilah's dad, Jess, was her best friend. They had a connection only her mother could dream of having with her. She was truly a "daddy's girl".
"He's already there" her mom says as she pays the toll.
"Ok I guess I'm going to listen to my music again" as she starts her music and puts her ear buds in.
"Ok" her mother says sadly.
Lilah lays her head against the window, her music and soft vibrations of the car causing her mind to drift into a tranquil lullaby.
