The sun finally came up filling my room with it's rays, they touched my skin instantly warming it. I heard Seth, my room mate, snoring softly in the bed next to mine. I crept out of bed quietly, making sure that I wouldn't wake him. I walked into the kitchen area and got an apple. I was greeted my my large Priceacanarian dog, Reese, she was one of my three. She walked into the kitchen, her nails scratching on the wood floor. Reese is all I have left of my parents, and it was my goal to keep her around and make sure that she lives a long, happy, and healthy life. She walked up to me and I crouched down, petting her large black head. She started wagging her tail then quickly stopped and looked at something in the doorway. It was Seth. Seth has been living with me for the past two years. His parents had left him when they escaped, that's what he told me, but I still think that there is still something he's not telling me. Seth was a very attractive man, he was the same age as me ,17, had dark brown hair in loose curls, he had the prettiest hazel eyes and pretty eye lashes, he had tan skin and was pretty tall. At least 6"3. He used to be on the football (soccer) and base ball team in school. That was until the town got ran over. Seth stood at the door way stretching then asked me "did you see any cows today?"
"I've only been up for fifteen minutes, jerk." I teased
"I'm going to need you to calm down missy." He said playfully
"And I'm gonna need you to get the other two dogs out so that we can start searching for those cows that you oh, so desperately need." I said sarcastically.
He pouted and went to what we call the "doggy room" and got the other two dogs.
Reese and I walked through the sliding glass door, I looked straight ahead to the abandoned corn field,or what used to be a corn field. The story behind the corn is that the farmers harvested one side of the field and got murdered transporting it. Then we all just helped our selves to the corn. Now that the corn is all gone, it's just an over grown field and some times, if we are lucky, the cow farmers let their cows and horses graze the field. And the fact that some of the neighbors are gone means that I claimed what used to be theirs' and most of that area isn't fenced in meaning that if a cow or horse does get carried away and starts to graze on any of my yards, then I have every right to take it. And to my luck there was four cows in my yard.
I dashed into the house forgetting all about my dog, and yelled "SETH THERE'S COWS IN THE YARD!"
Before I turned around I felt his footsteps as he bolted past me forgetting about the glass door and.....
I laughed.
"Shut up!" He said flustered.
He got back up and opened the door. I slipped past him. We let the dogs heard them to the pen. There were only three. Two bulls and one dairy cow. Well if you count the calf she has then it was four.
I looked over at Seth, imagining what would happen if things went south and his parents took him with them. I would've been completely alone or probably dead or in a gang. The thought of it alone was enough to make me shiver. Then it came to my mind, the craziest idea ever.
"Seth?" I asked in almost a whisper.
"Yeah what's up?" He asked.
"Well...I've been thinking..." I trailed off.
"Thiiiiiinking abooout whaaat?" He asked slowly.
"Well...I've been thinks my about leaving. Getting out of here. I-I know that it's....risky...but I'd rather leave and have the basic necessities of life and live knowing that we can thrive and live healthily and not be trapped here and depend on the farmers schedules." I pleaded.
He paused and kinda stared at me. I blinked for his response. He looked over and put halters on the cows that didn't have halters on. He looked at me and signaled me towards the barn.
He held the door open for me and I walked in and was greeted by my horse, Rooster, I reached out and pet her face. We only had three square bales and one round bale of hay left for them.
Seth cleared his throat loudly and said
"So...about your escape plan....I think we should go along with it...."
I got exited "Really!?"
He nodded and I grinned.
I managed to grab al the money and keep it where no one would even guess it would be, just in case we got mugged.
I only packed four outfits, but I made sure that they looked tattered and not expensive at all. I made sure Seth did the same, I really didn't want to attract any un wanted attention. I packed enough food and water and stuffed them in a saddle bag (Seth did the same). We basically just saddled up and left that night.
We've been riding for the past nineteen hours and decided that it was time for a break. We stopped near the trees, away from the road. I tied the horses to a tree, making sure that they wouldn't be seen. I laid down on the blanket and used the saddle mat as a pillow and curled up. I was about to drift off to sleep, when I felt a body lay next to me. I knew it was Seth. I turned over and faced him.
"I feel like I'm Alice, from Resident Evil " we both laughed at that. I was just trying to lift the mood.
"I'm going to try to get some shut eye....so good night i guess..." I said rather hesitant trying so hard not to make things awkward.
I heard my dogs searching for us in the distance knowing that they would find us soon. I finally drifted off to sleep.
I was shook until I woke up by Seth, who seemed to be panicking.
"What is it." I said sounding awfully tired.
"People...in trucks...and they have guns...I-I think they are looking for travelers!" He said.
I just gave him a blank stare. Then laughed.
"Seth. You know that...well one we DO have guns...and two there's a trail that can lead us away from the road, but it's risky because there could always be smugglers...or worse. But it would be way safer to take the trails rather than the road." I said almost panicking.
We decided on the trail. We both saddled up and I called for Reese and the other two to show us the way.
We road the trail for a good hour or so, then Reese led us off the trail and what she took us to shocked me.
