It was my turn to be shocked. Absolutely bowled over by this. It's like my brain had blocked out the fact that he was happy around us and we had a great time together. Everything seemed to suddenly fall into place in my brain like puzzle pieces.
I stood up abruptly, making Adam open his eyes, moved around to the other side of the table - letting go of my inhibitions and worries, ignoring the negative what ifs in my brain – and leaned down to kiss a shocked Adam. But this time I didn't apologise and run away immediately, I stayed. I felt a sense of relief throughout my whole body as Adam pushed his chair back and pulled me down onto his lap. We just looked at each other, goofy smiles on our faces. I realised at that moment that maintaining our relationship as just a friendship had made me tense, but now I was once again relaxed.
"Hi." I said as I looked at Adam grinning at me.
"Hi." He replied, "So...."
"So..." I echoed, smirking a little as he rolled his eyes.
"Are we, like, giving this whole you and me together again a go?" He asked, his arms still holding me on his lap as he sat on one of my wooden kitchen chairs.
"I'm game if you are." I replied, glancing at the clock and realising it was nearly time to go pick up Maisie from nursery.
"Sounds good." He said simply, like we had just discussed what to eat for dinner.
We just sat smiling at each other, not speaking, just smiling like the two dorks we really are.
"Shall we go collect and surprise little miss Maisie?" I suggested suddenly, going to stand up.
"Let's go get the princess!" Adam said, all of the sudden going from relaxed to very excited.
I loved how much he cared for end enjoyed spending time with my little girl.
"Cool." I said smirking and getting my car keys, stopping just short of the door and turning around to Adam, "But, like, no mention of this okay? We'll discuss us more tonight, after she's in bed." I said carefully, pointing from me to him and back.
He nodded and smiled, gesturing for me to go out the door.
ADAM POV
When Taylor called I was excited. She was actually calling me! And then she invited me to Nashville to accompany Maisie to a father-daughter dance, which surprised me even more. I was so pleased that both of them wanted me to be there, but also knew that in order for it to be a good experience, Taylor and I needed to talk.
What I never expected was the outcome of our talk. I never expected her kiss me again. I never expected the two of us to in effect get back together after years apart within the 20 minutes before we had to pick up Maisie. But that's what happened.
"Stop grinning like that mister." Taylor said teasingly as she drove down the roads to Maisie's nursery.
"I have multiple reasons to grin like this my dear. I have my favourite lovely lady next to me and we are on our way to surprise my favourite little girl at school. This grin is here to stay." I told her, making her laugh.
"Fair enough. Well, just so you know you might have a few of the other moms' eyes on you at nursery, so try not to make them all swoon. That is reserved for me." She said, winking at me as she turned into the driveway up to the nursery.
"Promise I'll try my best to avoid having all the mums falling at my feet. But you know I can't help the charm and good looks." I said, teasing her a little, "Isn't that what made you fall for me."
"Don't flatter yourself too much babe." She said laughing, making me smile as she called me babe for the first time in years. "Do you want to come in with me?"
"Hell yes!" I said, opening my door.
"Language Adam." Taylor said, rolling her eyes as I grinned guiltily.
"Sorry mother." I replied, making us both crack up as we went in to door.
"Hi Lucy! Are you all busy getting ready for tonight?" Taylor asked, talking to the girl at the reception desk as we went towards the '3-4' classroom.
"Almost ready Miss Swift. Is Maisie coming?" Lucy asked.
"Yup. With this dork right here." Taylor said pointing to me and laughing, making me blush as Lucy just smiled, obviously recognising me.
There were a bunch of parents milling around the entrances to the classrooms, a lot of whom Taylor seemed to know and greeted. Taylor had previously told me the nursery only has 30 kids divided into 3 classrooms, so it was small and people knew each other. Most of the kids also did after school activities together and lived near each other.
"Ready?" Taylor asked, peeking around the doorway to see where Maisie was.
"As ever." I replied, following her into the room.
