Unlikely Friends

Mirya was a girl who struggled to fit in she thought she was too fat to have friends. She had three friends, Maddie, Hanna, and Liz and the four were thought to be inseparable, that was until fourth grade when a new girl named Catherine came to school. Earlier that year Mirya had began branching out and making new friends little did she know that Jade, Jillian, and Alice would be just the people she needed. Mirya and her friends instantly welcomed Catherine into their group, something seemed off about her though. Catherine seemed to suddenly dislike Mirya, she wouldn't include her in the sleep overs at her house and during Mirya's birthday sleepover Catherine managed to convince Maddie, Hanna, and Liz to draw a mustache on Mirya's face. During recess one day at school Hanna came up to Mirya on the playground with Maddie, Liz, and Catherine in tow, "We don't want to be your friends anymore," Hanna blurted out in Mirya's face. Mirya began to panic, the three girls she trusted most didn't want to be her friend anymore, what could she do? With tears welled up in her eyes she did the one thing she could think of and ran off subconsciously in the direction of Jade, Jillian, and Alice. "Mirya? What happened? Are you okay?" Jade questioned.

"H-h-hanna, M-maddie, a-and L-liz s-said t-that t-t-they d-don't want t-to be m-my f-f-friend a-anymore," Mirya managed to choke out.

"What!! Let me go have a talk with them there has to be a reasonable explanation for this," Jade stormed to where Liz, Maddie, and Hanna were standing. From where Mirya was standing it seemed to be a very heated discussion with Jade doing most of the talking. Jade finished the talk and walked back to where Mirya was standing with Jillian and Alice. Just as Mirya was going to ask what they said the bell rang for them to go back inside.

It was the end of the day and Mirya was beginning to walk home when she saw Hanna on the swing set waiting for someone. "Mirya!" Hanna yelled once she spotted the girl, running up to her. "I-i just wanted to say I'm sorry! I didn't mean any of that Catherine made me say that I didn't want to be your friend anymore," she rushed out.

Mirya was taken aback, she didn't know how to reply. "I guess it's okay," she stammered. "I think that we should have some space though."

At that moment Mirya knew that no matter what Hanna, Maddie, and Liz said she would never be able to trust them fully again. But what she did know was that Jade, Jillian, and Alice came through for her when nobody else would and that is what mattered. Mirya knew now that those three girls she had confided in on the playground that day were true friends because although they didn't talk very much before that she knew she had new friends in them now.
