I have this strong fascination with humans. The way we communicate, the books we write, the films we watch, everything. And then he came into my life and said pretty things that would make my face turn red and my eyes glow with admiration, I knew my life wouldn't be the same ever again.

"Adaam," I laugh out as he looks at me. "Okay no seriously pay attention to the road, not me."
"But I love paying attention to you, Luna." He looks at me again.
"Okay yes, well I love living, so eyes on the road mister."
His hand found its way to my knee as I sat Indian style somewhere in between the passenger seat and the middle seat, him humming along to the song playing, me singing softly. It's nearly nine, and the stars are out and the moon is low in the sky, and I never want to leave. I rest my head onto his shoulder and he moves his hand from my knee, putting his arm around me. I let my eyes close as he begins to tell me about the time his grandfather nearly let him drown when he was just a boy. Approximately 3 songs later, the truck pulls to a stop, and the engine cuts. I'm not sure whether he's brought us to his house or mine, but I know if I keep my eyes closed he'll carry me in, just like my father used to do when I was a child.
"Alright princess, here we go," he whispers softly and I feel myself being lifted and the truck door being shut.
We go up porch steps, so I know were at his father's house. I let my eyes flutter open when he reaches toward the door knob, and let out a small noise.
"Good morning sunshine," I can't help but giggle as my beat up converse hit the ground, and he pushes open the door.
His dad, Mr. Bill, is sitting on the couch passed out with some old cowboy movie playing on the TV.
"Your mom said it was fine for you to stay over, since it was getting late, as long as my dad was home." Adam informs me.
We've been friends for years, so it was normal for us to have sleep overs.
I smile at him as he's already headed toward his bedroom. It's a Thursday night, so we've got school in the morning and it's nearly ten, so it would be wise of us to get some rest. I follow him into his bedroom that I've become familiar with. I pull off my jeans, and on a pair of his boxers, taking my bra off under my shirt. He does the same, pulling his shirt and jeans off.
He takes his place on the couch placed in the corner of his room, me on his bed. It's kind of become a habit I guess.
I lay in his bed long after he's fallen asleep, thinking about the two of us. I'm in love with Adam. I'm not sure how he feels about me, but I don't want my feelings to jeopardize our friendship.
Adam wakes me up the next morning after he's already showered, and is clothed in a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt.
"Apple Jacks or Cheerios?" He questions me.
"Surprise me," I groan, rolling out of bed as he turns his back leaving the room. I shut the door and pull on a pair of ripped up black jeans I had stored over here from last time, and find a Nirvana shirt in his closet, pulling it on, after replacing my underclothes. I pull my hair into a messy bun and brush my teeth in the bathroom, before walking into the kitchen, a bowl of Apple Jacks waiting for me.
"Good morning Luna, looking lovely as always. How'd you sleep?" Mr. Bill asks me before taking a sip of his coffee.
"Good. Thanks Mr. Bill, still my favorite."
"Hey! No fair Luna, no fair at all," Adam exclaims playfully.
Mr. Bill chuckles and continues to sip at his coffee, as Adam and I eat our cereal.
"Alright, let's head out," Adam speaks up after placing our bowls in the sink.
"You kids have a good day, stay out of trouble. Especially you Luna"
"Mr. Bill, come on now. I'm always good." I smile at him as I head out the door, Adam behind me.
The air outside is welcoming, a temperature somewhere between cold and warm. Adam and I climb into his truck, and we make our way to school.
Almost halfway there, right after we passed the lake, Adam glanced over at me, only to find my gaze already set on him.
"Jesus, Luna."
"What? I didn't mean to."
"You're just so cute. Like hello I'm trying to drive here but there you are watching me like I'm the most interesting thing ever and I think you are crazy cute."
I feel my cheeks heat up at the compliment.
"You're pretty cute yourself, tiger."
"See and everything always gets played off. I'm being so serious though. I have this insanely beautiful girl sitting next to me, wearing my shirt, sleeping in my bed, and it makes my mind do that thing you always talk about, like when the TV goes all black and white, you know what I mean."
We pull up to a stop light as he finishes. His ears are red at the tips, no doubt the same color as my cheeks.
"I do know what you mean, Adam."
"Do you really, Luna? I don't think you do."
"You have no idea." I sigh and cross my arms over my chest, annoyed at my petty attempt.
The light turns green and he doesn't reply, he doesn't look over at me until we get to the school. We both grab our bags from the backseat, where we left them yesterday, and climb out of the truck. Routine.
We walk up to the school together. Routine.
We pass Samantha Long's locker and she makes an attempt to steal Adam's attention, only for him to ignore her. Routine.
We get to my locker, and he bids me goodbye, "See you at lunch." Routine.
Adam and I don't really see each other throughout the day, unless on purpose and during lunch.
I do the whole locker thing, and make my way to class.
My first four classes go by, log rhythms, volleyball, Spanish, and lab day. I walk out to Adam's truck for lunch, pizza on Fridays. When I get there, Charlie, one of Adam's friends, already has two pizzas waiting. Him and Marissa, both sitting on the tailgate with pizza in their hands.
"Lunaaa," Charlie said excitedly when he notices me.
"Hey Charlie, Marissa," I smile and sit myself on the other side of Charlie.
"So, what's up with you and Adam?" Charlie questions, Marissa scrolling through her phone.
"What do you mean?" I question.
"Come on, Luna, you know spending all this time together, sleeping over at his house. Do you even know how he looks at you?"
"Wait, how does he look at me?" I ask curiously.
"Same way you look at him, babydoll."
It's then I realize it. Charlie's right, he must be. I have to tell Adam.
"Hey! The gang's all here!" Adam exclaims as he approaches us.
"Yeah, not for long though, think I could talk to you, privately?" I ask while coming up to him.
"Anything for you, Luna."
Adam and I made our way to a bench, not far from where the others sat on his truck.
"So what's up?" Adam questions casually.
"You, really. Well, us I guess. I reeeeaalllyyy like you Adam, like more than a best friend, you know?"
"Yeah, I know, Luna."
"You know? So that's it, that's all it took?"
"I mean- yeah. I like you a whole crap ton, obviously."
I let out a little giggle, "Cool then."

And so Adam and Luna lived two happy lives. They went on to graduate high school, and soon after got married at the courthouse (neither of them cared for an extravagant wedding.) Luna worked her whole life as a freelance journalist, traveling the world, with Adam by her side. Adam became a writer, and wrote a few books as well as songs. The two eventually settled down in a family-safe town in South Africa, and had a daughter. The couple lived their retired life volunteering at an elephant refuge, not far from their home.
