I sighed as the unmated males tried to go after a newly shifted female. My father doesn't care about the unmated males going after unmated females, he's just an asshole.
As I got up, I could feel my father's eyes watching me intensely. I jogged into the woods, my warriors and hunters running at my back. These are my brothers and sisters, the ones who'd never disrespect me or disobey me.
I stopped and they stopped behind me. Turning around, I saw they were all smiling knowingly, happily, excitedly, they've been anticipating this moment for the past three years I came up with the plan.
"Tonight! Tonight, at the edge of our hope, on the edge of our time! We don't believe in ourselves, but in each other! Tonight there is no wolf who stands alone! We are leaving this horrid pack! Becoming our own!" I called.
All six-hundred-and-eighty-six warriors and hunters bellowed and called in front of me. Males and females alike, many brought their families to come with me to form a new one.
"Myla, we need to move. Alpha Asshole is going to find us soon if we don't move," my close friend, Poker, said softly in my ear.
I looked at him, "You have a point, let's move."
We began running to the pack lines and crossed into the unclaimed territory. Poker had his mate, Natty, and his daughter, Delli, with him. He walked next to me and his small family next to him.
I looked up and noticed it was getting dark, "We need to find a cave and hunker down for the night. These unclaimed territories can be deadly at night."
Poker nodded and sent out Typhoon and Nado out ahead. They're my best trackers in this little pack. He sat down with his wife, who had their sleeping daughter on her lap, cradling her.
Jealousy and sadness hit me hard. I've been trying to find my mate for two years, after I shifted. Typhoon and Nado came back and told me that they found a nice cave system that will keep us safe, warm, dry, the works.
We ran to the cave and I sat at the mouth of the cave, everyone else fast asleep. My ears perked when the depressing howls of old pack mates sounded in the distance. One sounded the loudest, my father's.
'I'm sorry, daddy.' I said softly into the severed link.
I felt a small hand on my cheek and I looked down to see three pups staring at me. Smiling, they curled into my sides and one on my lap, falling fast asleep.
If only I could catch my sleep. Luckily, I did.
