Chapter 2
I pull up into the junior lot of our school and shift the car into park. I pull my phone out of my jeans pocket and begin to text Chloe, letting her know I am here. After about 5 minutes without a reply, I see a short blond girl walk up to the side of my car and sit in the passenger seat.
“Do you think my outfit looks okay? I couldn’t decide between a skirt or jeans. So I went with ‘What would Kal do?’ and I stuck with jeans, since that’s all you ever seem to wear. I mean come on Kal, do you even own anything besides jeans and t-shirts?” Chloe looks at me with a disapproving look.
I know where this conversation is going, and I don’t like it. “No no no.” I respond, shaking my head at her. “I like the way I dress, I don’t see anything wrong with it.” I motion towards my outfit for emphasis.
“We’re going shopping!” She says in a voice that sounds like an overly-excited five year old girl on Christmas.
I reach into the back seat of my car and grab my bag, silently ending this conversation. “Let’s go, the boys are probably wondering where we are.” I open the door, stepping out, and swinging my bag over my shoulder.
We walk to the front doors and I immediately spot my two favorite boys, River Thompson and Shane Falls.
Chloe, Shane, River, and I have been inseparable since pre-school. Nothing could ever tear us apart. Although Shane and River can be overly-protective older brothers sometimes, I love them to death.
“Ladies.” River says with that adorable, cheeky grin of his. I drop my bag to the ground and jump into his arms. He’s slightly taken aback by my sudden movement, but recovers quickly and wraps his arms tight around my torso, spinning me around.
“I missed you!” I say into his chest as he gently sets me back down on the ground. He chuckles slightly and plants a kiss on the top of my head. I step back, taking in his new appearance.
Taller, definitely taller. Tanner too. Is that a polo I see? Khakis too! “Monte Carlo has changed you sir.” I say to him. He looks at me with a half-smile.
“Do you like it?” River asks while shoving his hands in his pockets. He always does that when he’s nervous.
I stretch my arms out, grabbing his wrists, and pulling his hands out of his pockets. I look up into those beautiful brown eyes of his, “I love it.” I whisper to him.
He shoots me his signature grin, and I swear that I about melt in my shoes. He has no idea what he is doing to me. I’ve been in love with River since the second grade, and as of right now, he still has no idea. It’s better that way in my opinion.
I hear someone clear their throat off to the side in an act to catch to my attention. I look to the left and see Shane standing there awkwardly.
“Hello to you too, Miss Cravets.” He tilts his head down, chuckling lightly, locking his hazel eyes to the ground beneath him.
“Shane!” I squeal, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down in a tight hug. “Oh how I’ve missed you love bug!”
He snakes his arms around my torso, snuggling his head into the crook of my neck. We sit like this for a moment, taking in each other’s presence. I loosen my grip on Shane, taking a step back.
Chloe clears her throat, “We should probably get going. The bell is about to ring.”
I peer over my right shoulder; thinking if I were to run away from this hell hole, now would be the perfect opportunity. I decide against it, lifting my hands up to hold onto the straps of my backpack.
It’s now or never, Kallie. My subconscious says to me. I take in a deep breath, and then walk through the doors of Shalimar High.
Junior Year, here I come.
