there he sat on the hard, wooden floors of his high school gym.

dan sat against the wall right behind the volleyball players that were being their normal, purple, petty selves. wealthy was the word for purples but dan thought petty suited them better.

when a yellow girl came over and asked to play they all snickered.

"of course not!" the leader laughed, "go sit with that rainbow freak over there!" she cackled, pointing over at dan.

the poor yellow girl looked over at dan and frowned.

dan didn't smile or wave her over politely, he stayed in his straight faced trance.

it was easier if dan didn't talk. it cause him less issues in his life.

dan was a cute boy. he stood at six foot, three with dark-brown hair that fell in his brown-orange eyes constantly. his pale face was scattered with freckles. sealing the deal was his smile that gave him the cutest dimple you'd even seen.

dan's trance was broken when the white volleyball hit him in the chest and the teachers all blew the whistle for lunch.

he stood up and stretched out his long legs, pulling at his water coloured jumper. he also smoothed out his fluffy brown hair.

to dan's right stood the only popular person of the black colour in this time.

that person was a boy by the name of phil lester.

he didn't really fit the black persona which made dan wonder what he was hiding. to dan, phil seemed more pink or yellow.

phil faked his black, dan knew it. he tried too hard to be mysterious. so hard that it was apparent. or, at least, it was obvious to dan.

"what up, pride flag?" a red kid joked as he passed daniel, punching his arm.

dan didn't respond. the only time dan even talked was...well... never.

everyone had already shunned him. even the teachers knew dan had no explanation and that them being kind to him could potentially ruin their social lives.

once the herd of eleventh graders made it into the cafeteria, dan sped to the last table. he sat there alone and lunch-less, as always.

but today something different happened.

someone walked away from the "popular" table and made their way over to dan.

"hi!" the voice cheered as the voice's owner sat down next to dan.

"i'm not you charity work, phil," dan sighed, "unless you're trying to study me for science fair, i'm of no use to you."

phil ignored dan's pessimistic sarcasm and pushed a baggie of apple slices towards him.

"why don't you eat?" phil asked.

before dan could answer phil continued, "here, eat these. please dan?"

"why? did you poison it?"

phil furred his eyebrows and frowned.

"no! i'm worried! honestly, please, daniel, eat the apples.".

dan gave up and opened the tough plastic bag and insubordinately ate a single apple slice.

"thank you!" phil cheered. he then stood up and walked away. "wait, dan!" he called back, "eat the rest of those for me, okay?"
