Also in the scene of Jessica's Party, Clay did say that Jeff was feeling drunk or something. So he must have drove somewhere (don't judge me I forgot.) and got into that car crash because he was drunk.
Also, This is a theory but maybe Clay was so into the tapes bc he wanted to remember the times with Jeff.
