Chapter 34
Horrid,
Scorching,
Blinding,
Deadly,
Pain.
That's all I feel. I hear nothing, I see nothing.
My eyes open painfully. Ronan stands over me.
When he sees me open my eyes, he smiles. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?"
"I would feel better if I didn't wake up to your face." I croak.
He slaps me and leans back.
"I've had enough of your sass, Addalia."
I can't help myself. "What? Are you my mother?"
He glares at me. "Enough. You are being very immature."
"Yes, mom." I mutter.
"I'm not your mother. Your mother is dead and rightly so." He snaps.
I try to move my arms to slap him or punch him for the comment- I just want to hurt him for that comment- but my arms are bound to the bed.
He laughs- well, cackles is a better word. "You can't escape the ties."
"You don't know what I'm capable of!" I snarl.
He puts his face right in front of mine- I can feel and smell his breath. "Oh, but I do."
"No one knows what I'm capable of if I let go."
He steps back. "You know what I've learned? Love and betrayal aren't all that different. For love you hurt anyone just to have the one you want. For betrayal you'll hurt anyone just to have what you want."
"Where's Rey?"
"He escaped. Didn't care to save you. Poor damsel in distress has no prince."
"I'm no damsel in distress and I don't need a prince to save me."
"We'll see."
A tall, lanky man saunters up to stand by Ronan. Ronan bows quickly. "Father."
The man nods at me. "Is that her?"
Ronan nods. "Yes, sir."
"I know this is probably weird, but I really hate it when people talk about me like I'm not in the room." I snap.
The man tilts his head to the side like I'm a science experiment and he doesn't know how I work. "I'm sorry, dear. I'm Jonathan, Ronan's father."
"I've been aching to ask you a question for the longest time!" I exclaim.
"What's that?"
"Do you hate Ronan? 'Cause his name is weird."
" Says the girl named Addalia." Ronan mutters.
"Hey! My name is awesome!" I exclaim.
To my surprise, Ronan's dad/boss laughs. "You have spunk!"
"I prefer the terms 'sarcastic' or 'attitude'. Saying I have spunk makes me sound ancient."
Jonathan nods.
"Now, why the hell are you here and why did you say 'is that her' when you came in?"
"You ask a lot of questions." Jonathan says, starting to sound annoyed.
"If I didn't I'd be dead." I state bluntly.
"True enough."
"What do you want with me?" I ask.
"We want you to help us in the upcoming war." Jonathan says.
"War?" I ask, surprised.
"The war to get you back, my darling."
I draw in a startled breath. "I'm of no importance." I whisper.
"Oh, but you are. Your powers are extreme and you are very wanted."
"I'm not a item that you can bid for." I snap.
"That's what you think." Ronan mutters.
The anger burns in me so deep I can't control it. My eyes burn gold and the ropes melt away at my touch. I spring up and punch Jonathan in the face and it knocks him out. I knee Ronan in the stomach and he falls to the ground, groaning. For good measure, I kick him in the groin. I run out of the room and go to a closet. I find a grey tank top, blue jeans, and black combat boots. I quickly change out of my dirty clothes and into the clean ones. I walk out of the house and find a black motorcycle. I climb on it and drive away. Before I'm out of view of the house, I snap my fingers and the house explodes. The fire goes right over me because of a invisible forcefield.
I drive away from the house and pray like hell that this is over. But I know better now that with me "getting better" just doesn't happen.
