Evelyn

I arrived at 8:30 today at work and left at three in the afternoon to pack Chris' clothes and prepare for our lovely dinner with my lovely husband. I went to the grocery store to buy two small sized steaks for me to cook and some red wine because it was our favorite. After I got everything I need for our dinner, I went to the counter to pay for it. It wasn't long before I checked out and got into my car on my way home.

When I arrived home, I immediately took my groceries into the kitchen and started to prepare the steak. After marinating the steak, I leave it for about thirty minutes and went to make my potato salad. Then I decided to change my clothes and pack for Chris because after that I would only grill the steak and prepare the table for two.

It wasn't long until I was dressing up into comfortable clothes and was now packing Chris' clothes into his suitcase. I rummaged through our closet to find his lucky polo shirt, but instead I found a letter underneath all his work clothes. So here I was, opening the letter that had such a familiar sweet scent.

Chris,
It has been years since I last saw you. Cliché writing a letter, right? But hey, we once started this way when we were teenagers. I heard you already had a wife but what harm can be done by meeting an old friend? Call me if you can.

Much love,
Caroline

Then there was her phone number written at the back of her letter. This letter was sent a week ago, the week he and I seemed to drift apart. I guess he called his old friend and met with her. So many thoughts were running inside my head and I just seemed lost, but me being an optimist, I shook the feeling off and placed the letter back in its place and went to find Chris' polo shirt.

Hours seemed to pass by and I was already plating up what I had cooked and got dressed into a simple dress Chris gave me as a birthday present. I glanced at the clock seeing that it was almost six, so I got ready and went to sit on the couch and watch television for a bit while I was waiting for my husband to arrive.

It was now 6:20 and Chris was still not home, then I decided to call him. His phone kept on ringing but he never pick up. I sighed, but was already frustrated at him. A couple of minutes had gone by and I was still calling him but he still haven't picked up. The time was already 6:35 and he was supposed to be home by then, but there was still no sign of his car outside nor his presence entering our home.

7:02, the time reads. Instead of sitting on the couch, I already went to our dining table and started to play with the potato salad that I made an hour ago. Our food has gone cold and I was starting to lose my appetite on this dinner that I planned. Soon then, the front door opens revealing my husband Chris. He didn't notice that I was sitting in our dining room so he just went upstairs to our room. I slammed the fork down on the table and followed him to our room.

There Chris was, rummaging through our closet and got his shirt to change. "Ev, is that you?" I rolled my eyes and started to remove the heels that I was wearing and threw it on the floor, making Chris look over to me. "What's with you?" He huffed while putting on his shirt.

"What's with me? No, Chris what's with you?" He looked at me puzzled as I was furrowing my eyebrows in frustration. "I waited for you for an hour because I invited you over for a dinner. Don't tell me you forgot, Chris because for all I know you were always so smart and never forgets everything or everyone. Gosh, this was supposed to be a lovely dinner with my husband before he goes on a business trip and you weren't even here! So tell me, where were you?"

"Evelyn, there was an urgent meeting okay? I was packing my stuff already and they just had to call one last meeting before we go—" I huffed, making him stop. "Don't tell me you don't believe what I just said?"

"I really don't, Chris. Who calls up a last minute meeting while they know that their employees were about to go on a business trip?"

"Come on, Ev!" He was now facing me, clearly frustrated. I wasn't going to buy his lie. "Don't you trust me?"

"My god, Chris I don't know whether I should trust you! I have been calling you and you haven't picked your phone up." I walked closer towards him, then there it was again. That familiar sweet scent was all over him, making me furrow my eyebrows. He must have noticed the way I reacted so he walked pass by me and went to crouch down on his suitcase. "Have you eaten?"

"They served food after the meeting." He mumbled, still fixing his already neat suitcase and not facing back up to me.

"Oh they did? Wow, such great people—"

"Evelyn, stop it will you? I'm sorry okay? Now I should get going. Jonathan, Blair and Caroline are probably waiting for me at the airport." Caroline. He was going on a business trip with Caroline. I don't even know if that was the same Caroline that wrote him the letter because I personally didn't know her, but something seemed fishy about that girl. He stood back up and picked his suitcase and started to slowly walk away from me.

"So, you'll be leaving your wife without a proper goodbye?" He stopped, his back still facing me. "Just so you know, Chris I waited for you to come home. I barely touched the food I made for the both of us because I don't want you to think that I was being impatient."

"I'm sorry, Evelyn." He sighed, facing me and walked closer towards me. "I'll make it up to you when I get back. It'll only be three days in London and I promise to make more time for you as soon as the trip is over." He kissed my forehead then my lips for a split second then walked towards the door again.

"Don't you want me to drive you there?" Chris stayed silent for a few minutes then I heard him sigh. "Babe?"

"Sure, Ev.." He trailed off then rubbed the nape of his neck. "Let's go." His voice suddenly changed and went out of the door. Let's see who this Caroline is.
