Jeffrey Roth was 19, a college student. He had the blessing of being handsome, the curse of absolute boredom, and the entirely average (given his age) condition of 'wanting more out of life.'. Every day routine consisted of sleeping, waking up, going to school, hanging out with that one friend he knew in high school, and go home, repeat ad (what seems like) infinitum. While everyone else was busy in university, going to parties, or obsessing over getting their major, Jeffrey was just finishing his freshman year in community college. A truly Herculean task, no doubt.
One day, his grandmother called at the Roth residence, which consisted of a Mr. and Mrs. Roth, two sisters, and a Jeffrey for good measure. It was not unusual for Grandma Vigny to call Mrs. Roth to check on her daughter and her family. That day Grandma Vigny called and inquired after her grandchildren. After further inquiries about Mrs. Roth's health, the family's health, any news in the United States, Mrs. Vigny asked her daughter:
"Ma cherie, I miss you so much. Is it possible to come over for just a week? I've bought you cruise tickets for France." Mrs. Roth, unfortunately, had to decline the invitation, for she and her husband expected to be thoroughly occupied that month.
"Well, what about the children?" Grandma Vigny asked. "When are they going to have their Easter break?' Mrs. Roth had to ask her children. When the information was provided, it was decided that the children would come over Beune, Burgundy for a week in April.
