*Dan's POV*:
I woke up the next morning to someone shaking my shoulder.
"Daniel, get up." My mother says lightly but with authority.
I slowly sit up and look around feeling a bit dizzy. I was on the floor instead of my bed with a piece of paper on the floor next to me.
My heart stops for a moment when I remember last night.
"What were you doing on the floor?" She asks and grabs my elbow, helping me stand.
"I-I don't remember." I stutter truthfully. I just remember reading the note and that was it.
She sighs and looks at me with sad eyes. "I know how hard it is to lose a protector Dan. I had to lose mine as well." She reminds me. "What happened yesterday, Louise told me you didn't want to go to the village!?" She asks changing the subject.
She might have lost a protector, but I know for certain she doesn't understand how I feel right now. "I just wasn't up for it, sorry." She smiles weakly. "Ok, ... Have you thought of which prince you want to choose?" She asks.
I shake my head. "I really don't want to marry any of them." I say softly. "I know I cant choose that, but love isn't forced."
She nods and raises and eyebrow, showing a slight smirk. "Would you choose Phil?"
I freeze, unsure of how to answer. "I don't know." I say and look away.
She laughs causing me to blush. "Ah, I think you do."
"I don't know what love is! How am I supposed to know if I'm in love with Phil?" I hiss at her.
She laughs again but soon calms down. "Tell me something, if you found out Phil passed away, what would you do?" She asks simply.
I feel my heart die in my chest and tears come to my eyes. "Please tell me that isn't true! He cant die!" I plead before I can stop myself.
"He isn't dead Daniel, compose yourself. I was asking a question." She says.
I wipe my tears away, feeling a bit flushed. "What does that accomplish!?"
"What would you do if you found out Louise had passed away?" She asks.
My heart constricted but its definitely not the same feeling. I was starting to see her point and she noticed.
"Are you in love with Phil?" She asks again.
"I...I guess? Yes... No... I don't know!" I say quickly. I look up at her sharply, glaring at her as my vision blurs as tears once again start to prick at the corners of my eyes. "It doesn't matter anyway! Phil is gone, father wants me to marry Louise and I only have two other options if I don't choose her. Besides, Phil wouldn't feel the same." I mumble the last part as I wrap my arms around myself, feeling the cold.
"Sweetheart, Phil looks at you the way your father used to look at me. He's in love with you." She tells me reassuringly.
"Then why did he leave!?" I cant help my voice cracking.
She smiles sadly. "Because he knew he was going to have to anyway."
I look down at the ground. "So why are you doing this? Why bring it up? It doesn't matter anyway." I mutter feeling defeated.
She sighs. "We, as in both I and your father, would like him to come back."
My head jolts back up in shock. "What!?" I ask confused.
She nods, a large smiles over her face. "You need you protector." She winks at me.
As happy as I felt, there was something she wasn't telling me. "Why? Why now?"
