Promises on Sapphire

Chapter 1

Her POV

In this world full of magic, there is one thing that I'll never forget. He promised, and I will never forget that.

Flashback...

"Happy birthday Amara!" he happily greeted me.

"Happy birthday to you too!" I greeted back.

You heard it right. We have the same birthdays.

"Where's my gift?" he asked as he scrunched up his cute face.

"Give me my gift first!" I crossed my arms and laughed, which made him smile. But his smile faded immediately, as if remembering something sad.

"What's wrong?" I asked him.

" Nothing." he smiled again. "I'll give you your gift later. For now, let's get ready for our 7th birthday party!! Wooh!!" he stood up and started to dance foolishly.

I laughed hard. "You look stupid! Hahaha!"

"Me? Stupid?" he stopped dancing and then started to tickle me.

I was already lying on the grass and laughing hysterically.

"Who looks stupid now?" he teased while tickling me.

"Enough already!" I pleaded as I laugh and

After he tickled me, he helped me stand up.

"It's almost time for the party. We better get inside. Mom's probably looking for us. Race?" he challenged me.

"Nah.. You might cry if you lose. Crybaby. " I teased him.

"I am not a crybaby!" he protested.

"Okay." I said before running, as fast as I can.

"Hey! Not fair! I wasn't ready yet!" he shouted before he ran after me.

After the party...

I went to their balcony and looked up at the night sky. The stars were beautiful. I was so focused on the stars that I didn't notice him walking towards me.

"Hey." I was startled when he spoke.

"Hey. You startled me." I chuckled.

He looked at my eyes. There was sadness in his eyes. I was about to ask him why he was sad but then he looked away and smiled. "I'm gonna give you something."

I really want to ask him what the problem was but it was obvious that he's trying, to hide it from me. Maybe it was not the right time to ask. He'll tell me if he wants to tell me. So, I smiled back.

"Is it my gift?" I asked.

"Yeah." he grinned. He took out a red velvet box and opened it. But before I could see what was inside, he covered the box again. "Close your eyes first." He grinned at me.

I raised my eyebrow at him but I did what he told me.

I felt something being placed around my neck so, I immediately knew that it was a necklace.

"Open your eyes!" he said, his voice full of excitement and playfulness.

When I opened my eyes, I gaped at what I saw. I thought what he placed on my neck was a regular necklace but it wasn't. It was a white gold necklace with a big heart shaped sapphire pendant.

"Do you like it?" he asked me.

"Like it? Like is an understatement. I love it!" I exclaimed and hugged him.

"You're choking me!" he said while pretending to get choked.

I pulled from the hug and slapped his chest. We both laughed.

"That's not all." He took a bigger box. It's also velvet but it was blue. It had silver accents around it which sealed the box. On the center, there was a heart shaped keyhole.

"Place your pendant on the keyhole." he told me while he was grinning and jumping with excitement.

I placed my pendant on the keyhole then suddenly, the silver accents which sealed the box moved towards the keyhole until the box was no longer sealed. When I lifted the box's lid, I saw three fist-sized shiny sapphires with words engraved on each of it.

"Read the words." he told me, grinning.

I grinned back at him and then read the words engraved on the sapphires. On the fist sapphire, the engaraved words say: Friends forever; on the second: I'll never forget you; and on the third: You will forever be in my mind and heart.

After reading those words, I felt happiness and at the same time, sadness. Happiness because he gave me not just gifts but promises I could hold on to and sadness because I felt like he was saying goodbye.

I looked up to him and saw him smiling. "Thank you Sam, but why give me these? These, they're too much. And what does these words mean?" I asked, puzzled.

His smile faded. He looked away from me. "I.. We.. My parents and I.. We're going to go to Meriaca. And we'll live there. "

Hearing those words and the thought of him leaving made me feel alone. But it was obvious that he's also sad so I didn't want to put more weight on his feelings. I didn't want him to leave but he has to. So, I pretended to be happy for him.

"Oh.. Good! I heard that Meriaca is a beautiful country." I said trying to sound cheerful.

"You're okay with me, leaving?" he asked, hurt.

I walked towards him and hugged him from the back. "No, that's not what I meant. But isn't going to Meriaca your dream?"

He turned to me, so I pulled from the hug. "It's OUR dream. I don't want to go without you." he said, giving emphasis to the "our" word.

"I know. But I can't leave because my dad's here and you can't stay 'cause your parents are leaving." I said trying to hold back my tears. "I don't want you to leave. You're my bestfriend. But you have to leave. Just promise me one thing."

He looked at my eyes and I saw that tears were already streaming down from his eyes.

"Come back." saying those words just made me lose control over my tears so, they streamed down face.

He hugged me. Both of us were crying. When we finally pulled from the hug, he looked at me and said "I will."

The day after the party, he and his parents left.

End of flashback...
