On a warm autumn day, I was making my way to my new house with my mother. She had recently gotten a new job at a new location in the United States. I, being originally from Arizona, wasn't used to the humidity of the northern Californian coast. And, along with the new job, my mom found a new boyfriend, who she is soon to be married to. And, as it turns out, he has two kids. A boy and a girl. Looks like I'll have to be nice.
We arrive in front of the mansion, greeted by a butler and a maid, the butler for me and the maid for my mom.
"Sir, Ma'am, if you would, Master Penhall would like to see you in his study. Molly and I will take your stuff up to your rooms while you and Master Penhall talk." Says the butler, looking directly at me when he was saying it.
I feel a little creeped out, sensing a different meaning behind his words. "Now. Allow me to introduce myself," says the butler. "My name is Andrew Marcin, and the maid that was just here, Molly, is my wife."
I sit there, dazed, still thinking of the way that Andrew looked at me. "Yeah nice. I'm Karden. Now, please lead us to his study?" I say, getting a bit short fused for some reason.
"Of course. Right this way." Says Andrew, leading us down a hallway to a set of double doors. "Now, he's a bit short tempered today. So watch what you say and how you act."
I feel a slight shiver go down my back as I walk in to the study, feeling my new step dad's eyes penetrating through me, scrutinizing every detail. "So. This is the Child of the Light that I've heard so much about? Miranda, please step out." He says, addressing my mom. "Karden, sit. You and I have a few things to talk about before your mother and I speak."
I sit down nervously, chills still going down my spine. "Don't be nervous. I know that you're probably wondering what the term "Child of the Light" means." He says, looking out the window of his study. Without letting me speak, he continues, "A Child of the Light is someone who possesses the power to demolish darkness, someone who has a fraction of the powers of our Father," he says. "The Children of the Light can possess the power of runes, power over the elements, power to control their victims, and much, much more that you will soon learn about. But my power, for example, is being able to see what type of ability fellow Children possess." He looks at me once more, his sharp eyes holding mine. "And you, my child, possess three of them. The power of Runes, the power to control the Elements, as well as the power to read minds."
I feel a chill go down my spine when he mentions the last one. "I... I can read minds?" I ask
"Yes, actually. You're the most powerful Child I've met, and that's saying something because I've met every single Child out there."
I sit there in silence, mulling over what he said.
'Anyway, I am going to be the one that will be training you to control your powers. In the meantime, Andrew will show you to your room. Your closet will have not only your clothes, but also some extra battle clothes that you will need for training," says Penhall, motioning for Andrew and I to leave and to allow my mother in.
'I wonder what they were talking about?' I hear a voice that sounds distinctly like my mothers in my head. I jump, startled by it, earning a worried look from my mom. I smile at her and walk with Andrew up to my room.
"Master Whol-" starts Andrew before I cut him off.
"Karden is fine. No need for such formalities."
"Well, alright, Karden. But you see, your step brother and step sister are not the only other children here, we have a multitude of children, some of the Light, that will be able to guide you. Your room so happens to be next to Jonathon's, another Child that also has ability over the elements." I nod, listening to what Andrew says.
'So... Can I meet them?" I ask, genuinely wanting to get to know them.
"Master Penhall has made it so you will be introduced tonight at dinner. But I'd watch where you step with some of them." Andrew warns.
I nod, opening my bedroom door, my eyes widening in awe. "This... This is all mine? It's so big!" I walk over to my bed, flopping down. Instead of the softness, I land on something firm, and I hear a distinct "oof." I get up and move the covers, looking down at the face of the most beautiful boy I've ever seen.
Andrew comes in, an amused look on his face. "Karden, meet Jonathon. He's your roommate, and a REAL charmer. I'll take my leave now," says Andrew, giggling as he walks away and closes the door.
"What was that all about?" I ask, confused, looking at Jonathon. I stare for a minute, taking in his half naked body, blushing darkly when I realize that we're in the same bed.
I jump up and walk over to the bathroom, saying nervously,"I'll uh... I'll be right back."
I lock the door behind me, sitting on the toilet with my head between my knees. I let out a shaky sigh, breathing deeply. "Okay, Karden. Get yourself together. He's just your roommate. Remember. You're straight. Now get out there and quit worrying over a guy!" I whisper to myself.
I walk out of the bathroom to find Jonathon missing. 'Where did he go?' I think to myself before shrugging and flopping back on my bed, drifting into a deep sleep.
