The bell rings for school to start. Nardeen, Jovana, and I wave goodbyes as we enter the pit of disparity that people call school. The soles of my shoes trample the gentle flowers that fall from our courtyard trees. I mindlessly enter Ms. Skuse's classroom, not paying attention to anything as usual, and wait for the bell to ring for 1st period.
The bell. Music to my ears. I quickly stand up and push past to googling eyes of the table of uglies. I barge through the hall, high fiving Matthew as we pass by as usual, and swiftly step into Mrs. Rambur's room. I slam my red sling pack onto my table, startling the gentle Jovana, giving me a kind smile of acknowledgement.
"Did you do last nights homework? It was pretty easy." She simply asked.
"We had homework?" I not surprisingly replied. She laughs at my forgetful ignorance, and turns her paper to me as I jot down as much as I can.
I turn to grab my phone from my desk but my hand grasps for empty air. My brain immediately goes into panic mode, but I turn to see a chuckling Asian to my right. Andrew waves around my phone, filming on my camera.
"Today on Andrew's daily vlogs we observe the dangerous Amelia Majorida!!!" I try to grab my phone but he passes it to Xavier behind him as he then fumbles with the device. I instantly tackle him for it, not wanting anything to happen to my precious. But then we all heard the bell rang and we all fumble to our seats. I snatch my phones and sat down as smooth as possible. People still talk because it is normal for Rambur not to come in until minutes later. Xavier's table and I exchanged sticky notes of inappropriate phrases, laughing and getting rid of them immediately so the teacher doesn't find them on the floor.
Fifteen minutes pass and still no Rambur. Van looks out the door into the hallways.
"I don't see her." She informs the class. We all look around in question because this is the longest she has ever been out.
After 20 long minutes, Rambur comes barging through the door. She then does something she has never done before, she closes the door and then locks in. We all look at each other in question. She turns and rushes to her desk in a sweat, and dials the phone. She mutters something about our door being locked and our classroom secure.
"This does not ease me in the slightest." I whisper over to my table-mates. Havana gives wide eyes, Jovana follows with a fearful look.
"Darling umm.... something has ha-" the Intercom cuts Mrs. Rambur off.
"Hard lockdown! I repeat! Hard! Lock! Down! Not a drill! Get into a safe place and lock all doors! There is a shooter on the loose! May be more than one! Again there is a shooter on the lo-" the speaker let's out a whine as the principal was cut off my a loud bang. I looked around, searching for a way to react. Some people were still peaceful, something were hyperventilating, some were on the verge of tears. But I did how I would actual react.
"Wut the FAk?!" Everyone gives eachother worried looks.
"Everyone get away from the door! Away! We need to be out of sight!" We all huddled next to the cabinets. Shaking in fear, muttering prayers, texting friends and loved ones. I just sat absolutely still.
We are having an actual school shooting...
