I Can't Help Falling In Love With You

Chapter One

     My books fly across the hallway and my shoulders slump. I guess I won't get to class on time today. It won't really matter. I can be late to class multiple times and my grades won't change a bit. I glance up to see Valerie smirking at me and twirling her blonde hair innocently.

"Yes?" I ask. This is routine for us. Always this time. Always this hallway. Always my scattered books across the floor. People were stomping on them all around me.

"Where's my chemistry homework?" Valerie demanded.

"Look on the floor," I deadpanned. "You knocked it down when you shoved my books out of my hands." Valerie gave her a dirty look and knelt down to search through the pile of papers at her feet.

"If you didn't do it I swear I'll--," Valerie muttered under her breath but didn't get to finish.

"Hey babe!" The voice of Blake O'Neil called down the hallway. Valerie snapped her head up and put on a flirty smile.

     "Hey babe," Valerie greeted and wrapped her long, skinny arms around Blake's neck. Blake scowled and took her arms off his neck. Valerie's smile fell. "What's wrong, baby?"

     "I'll tell you what's wrong, baby," Blake shot. "Where were you last night?" Valerie looked at me and I shrugged, trying desperately to hide my smirk.

     "I was just at Julia's house," Valerie sang sweetly. I gave her a confused look. Blake looked at me and I was about to shrug until a high heel crushed my toe.

     "Ow!" I squeak. "Yeah she was at my house." I was disgusted at the lie I told. I don't like to lie. I'm lied to way too often.

     "Really?" Blake asked. I could tell that he knew I was lying. His eyes were pleading with mine. Hopefully he's smarter than he lets on.

     "Nein," I mutter. His eyes brighten and Valerie's high heels dig into my toes. I bite my lip to keep from crying out. I guess he is smarter than he lets on. He turns to Valerie and glared at her.

     "You bitch!" Blake hisses. "I know you were screwing with Kaleb!" Valerie's face falls again.

     "Baby, I--," Valerie started.

     "Save it," Blake backed away. "You'll pay for this, Valerie!"

     "I'm just gonna," I jabbed my thumb behind me, "head to class." Surprisingly, Valerie let me go. I gathered my stuff and ran like the devil was chasing me.
