''Do you see this?''

.

''I- I can't believe it.''

Amayah looked at a 17 year old Sophronia, awestruck at what was right in front of them, something that was no less than a miracle, a mystery, something that she believed was implausible in their world too.

In 16 years of her life, she had witnessed some of the most uncanny things of life, different dimensions, different revelations, but what she was seeing now was capable of outshining everything else, because it looked like the biggest loophole of nature.

.

''Do you know what you have achieved, Sophie?''

Amayah asked her best friend cum older first cousin, whom she dearly called Sophie, citing her long name too painful to utter.

An equally excited Sophronia looked at her younger cousin with a new twinkle in her eyes, as she giggled to her heart's content, proud of what she had achieved, yet not bragging, as she darted her gaze at the beautiful butterfly in front of her eyes.

.

.

''She had lived beyond her lifespan, Sophie. Even the rarest butterflies can only live up to 12 months in the rarest scenarios, and here, you made this one live for over 14 months and still counting. Do you know what this means?''

Amayah asked with both awe and excitement in her eyes, while an elated Sophronia whose hazel eyes shone incessantly with happiness slightly nodded her head and added,

''I do, Amayah. I did create the immortality spell after all. And I don't know how.''

.

.

As she let the butterfly take off from her finger, she watched in silence the vibrant essence it spread all across as it flew away and the sun shone a little more brightly, as if the universe and the celestial beings too wanted to felicitate her on what she did.

But there was still a dilemma playing in her mind and that very well began to reflect on her face, as her porcelain skin turned a little shade of red, marking the turmoil inside her, and her brows furrowed as a frown took over her visage.

This didn't go unnoticed by Amayah as she looked at Sophronia and asked her with a concern filled voice,

''Sophie? What is it? Is something bothering you?''

She waited in silence as Sophronia still looked at the sky as if tracing with naked eyes any last essence of beautiful butterfly who she had gifted an extra surreal life, where she had defied nature, and called on a judgment that she ultimately thought didn't belong to her.

''I- I feel like I have done something wrong, Amayah.''

She stuttered a little as she now looked at Amayah, with a strange fear sparkling in her eyes replacing the previous ounces of joy, while Amayah looked at her with a confused face, and enquired—

''But why Sophie? You have always been a gifted witch, remember? You knew spells when the rest of us had merely begun to understand the meaning of spellcraft. You do remember right, in our coven, you are regarded as a special and gifted witch?''

Sophronia nodded in affirmation as she looked at her entwined hands, her long wavy tresses creating a veil for her on both sides, as she pondered about what her cousin said.
