Chapter 1
The lights went on in the warehouse that she was caged in. Sylvia blinked trying to adjust her eyes to the bright light that came to signal the scientists were starting their day. Do Not move she said to herself. she continued to lay curled up in her small cage as the guards did their rounds making sure everyone was still alive this morning.
Sylvia waited with bated breath. She was going to play dead today. They would open her cage and try to figure out what was wrong and fix it or her body would be thrown in the incinerator if she was truly dead.
The guard walked up and banged his nightstick against her cage and she willed herself not to move. Don't breathe she told herself.
"Doctor" He called out across the room. " Cage number 4263 is unresponsive. "
This was it. The moment she had planned for for three months. Her heart pounded in her chest as she heard the jingle of keys. The caged door swung open and she was pulled out by her hair. Pain shot through her but she did not make a sound. Did not move a limb. She stay dead by the looks of it. She could hear footsteps closing in on her. Don't panic, wait. She told herself again. After years of being in a cage for people to study she was about to be free.
"Oh it's the talker. " The Doctor said with unusual excitement. That did almost make her laugh. This guy hated her. For after years growing up in her cage she developed a very weird sense of humor. She was sarcastic and irritating. Many times her mouth had gotten her in a lot of trouble which normally ended in some form of torture as punishment. They had tried and failed to beat it out of her. She was smiling on the inside. Must remain still just a little longer.
" Bring her this way. " The doctor ordered the guard walking away from her. " We will have to do an autopsy to see the cause of death. " She could hear doctor scratching on his clipboard and the rustling of the guards cloths as he bent for her.
Her eyes snapped open then. The guard startled, leaped back just as she lurched to her feet. Quickly she reached out to the guard's gun on his hip and pulled the trigger. He had bragged to her months back that the safety was always off on the gun just in case these cagelings got out of hand. The guard had laughed at them then but it had got her thinking and forming a plan to escape.
Screams filled the building as the guard fell to the ground gripping his leg, blood pouring from his foot. The gun still being gripped by her, slide from its holster as the guard fell. She raised it pointing it at the fallen man. He raised his arms to defend himself as she pulled the trigger again and watched him slump to the ground. Turning she saw the doctor staring at her in shock raising the gun again and once more pulling the trigger as he turned to run. He fell to the floor.
"Help me." Someone yelled. A boy in a cage not to far from her own. Cage 5231. Running up to the guard she grabbed his keys and handed them to the boy.
"I'm sorry I can't do more. " she told him running to the window that was next to her cage. She could hear yelling now as people came rushing this way obviously in a panic from hearing the gun shots. She fired at the window and watched as the glass shattered and fell away as the footsteps started echoing in the building.
Her heart was beating wildly now as she gripped the window cill feeling the glass bite into her hands as she pulled herself through the window. She was almost free when hands came around her ankle and pulled her back. She could feel the glass cut into her belly as she kicked out and knocked her capturor away.
Bolting she yanked her body through the window and ran while the people behind her screamed at her to stop. It was dark outside and the alarms started to sound blaring in her ears as she ran for the trees. If she made it to the trees she would be free. Gun fire came from behind her making her run faster. She was almost there when a bullet hit her shoulder and spun her around. She could feel the wet grass under her as she scampered to her feet as people came out of the warehouse shouting at her to stop. Almost there she told herself as she started to run for the trees again.
Hitting the tree line sent a wave of relief through her. They would never catch her now. She was free.
