When she collected all the homework, she said," I'll be grading these during class when you're working on this assignment," as she passed out another paper.
"Can we work in partners?" Someone asked.
"Yes, you may."
I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Taeil, smiling at me brightly and mentally telling me his intentions.
"No. Just no." I coldly told him, knowing he wanted to work in partners.
"Well, if you need help, you know who to ask," he said with a wink.
"I'd rather go and ask a toddler," I muttered, turning back.
"If you say so, princess," I heard him say.
When I tried to work on the first question, it was confusing. 'What the heck is a negative slope?' I thought in my head. Skipping onto the next question, I just found it even more confusing. I sighed in defeat, algebra wins.
"Are you sure you don't need help?" I heard Taeil ask from behind me. I grabbed my hair in frustration.
"I guess not," he concluded, getting out of his desk and getting on his knees to my right.
"Look, it's not difficult, a negative slop is just a line going down, positive is going up. Zero slope is a horizontal line and the undefined one is straight up and down," he explained as he pointed to the graphs on my paper. I nodded, letting him know I understood.
"Now, for this question, you have to explain the difference between a zero and undefined slope," he said, pointing to the question on the bottom.
I hate these questions where there's no multiple choice.
"So you write-" Taeil started as be grabbed my hand and started writing as if I was a little kid that doesn't know how to hold a pencil. I quickly yanked my hand away from his, feeling a little queasy inside.
"I- I can do it myself," I said coldly, beginning to write. This queasy feeling inside me is not of disgust, it seemed like I had gotten nervous from the sudden contact ..
'EW!! What am I thinking?!' I thought to myself as I tried to shrug it off. As I wrote, Taeil wouldn't get his eyes off me and that just made me feel even more uncomfortable.
"Stop staring at me."
"But .. you're so beautiful," he said with a sincere tone. I looked up at him and made a face, then I returned back to writing.
"There.. I'm done," I said, placing the pencil on the desk. Taeil took my paper and checked over my answer, nodding in approval.
"Good job, I'll turn it on for you," he said, taking his paper as well.
"Wait, you're done? You spent the whole time helping me," I told him in confusion. He flashed a smile.
"I was already done when I helped you," he explained, going up to the teacher to turn in the papers. I scoffed. Nerd. Always finishing in a quarter of a second.
As he walked back to his seat, I felt the need to thank him. I wanted to show my appreciation, but if I do, he'll think we're friends or something. Yet, he still helped me well so I turned around to face him.
"Taeil .." I started. He immediately looked up from his journal and looked at me.
"Ne?"
"Uh .. Thanks.." I said with a straight face.
"Can you at least smile when you say it?" He asked. I rolled by eyes and turned back around with a grunt. I guess that's what I get for being nice to nerds. Then, he slightly tapped my shoulder.
