Good afternoon mr ___ and fellow classmates. Today I am going to share about Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is one of the most important traditional holidays to Chinese people and it usually lasts for 15 days. The day is celebrated on the first day of the first month according to the Chinese calendar

•So how did Chinese New Year come about?
The most well known legend is about the nian.
-There was a monster in the ancient times that lived in the mountains and at the end of winter when there was nothing to eat, it will visit the village and eat cattle, crops and even people.

-To prevent nian from attacking people and causing destruction, people put food at their doors for nian.

•The villagers then figured out that nian was scared of loud noises like firecrackers and the colour red.
<People then start to put red lanterns and red scrolls on their windows and doors to stop nian from coming inside. Crackling bamboo which was later replaced by fire crackers, was lit to scare nian away

•What are the preparations done for Chinese New Year? <Preparations are usually done days or weeks before the Chinese New Year.
•Families clean the houses, prepare food for the feast and make banners and decorations.

•It is said that cleaning the house before the new year comes is to get rid of all the bad luck gathered in the previous year.

•On New Year's Eve, people will go to temples to pray and bring offerings of food and incense to please the spirits of the deceased so that they may bring good luck.

•They also wear new pjs to sleep the night before as it is believe to bring good luck.

•There will also be a reunion dinner that brings together all the family members. Some of the food they eat during the dinner are;
Nian gao, which are rice cakes, tang yuan, which is typically consumed during the 15th day of the celebration and fish. People also toss yu Sheng, which is a raw fish salad

•During Chinese New Year people will go around visiting relatives and friend's homes to wish them a good year ahead. People bai nian with either two or four mandarin oranges which they present to the host of the homes they visit

•parents usually give their children red packets as blessings.

•and if you're lucky, you may be able watch live performances of lion dances and dragon dances
