Cassandra

“Welcome back, boss!” Ashley, my secretary smiled at me.

“Thanks Ash.” I smiled at her enthusiasm. Ash and I have been working together

for almost an year and a half. The only thing I could say about her is that she’s the

world’s most resourceful person. “So, what’ve you got for me?” I asked as I opened

the door to my office and set my things on the table.

“A few appointments and a special order. The usual.” She said nonchalantly.

“Alright, keep the files on my desk and I’ll see what I can do.” I smiled at her as

she bounced out the office. I was adjusting my cupboard when Ash came back with a

bunch of files.

“Oh, and there was a letter that came two days ago.” She handed me a manila

envelope. It’s from a lawyer’s office in England. Strange. I thought as I took it from

Ash. I safely tucked it in my purse.

“Thanks.” I said distractedly as I started going over the files.

“Want me to get your coffee?” she asked brightly as she stood at the door.

“Very much, thanks.” I gave her a short smile before I immersed myself in work.

“Knock, knock.” Came a voice from the other side. I suppressed a smile as the

door opened. Ash came in carrying my usual cup of coffee.

“Thank you.” I said as I took the coffee. Strangely enough, the smell of coffee was

no longer heavenly. Instead, I felt nausea. I kept the mug on the table and stood up.

“Are you alright?” she asked as she watched me move around the office like a

hawk. As I lifted my hand to push the drapes aside I heard Ash gasp behind me.

“What?” I whirled around. All of a sudden, I felt dizzy and the nausea returned

with a vengeance. I clutched the gigantic window handle and took calming breaths

as I waited for the nausea to pass.

“Cassandra!” I heard someone exclaim in fear as I was engulfed by a pair of warm

arms that I’d come to know so well.

“What are you doing here?” I asked weakly as I buried my head in his chest, the

scent of spice and pine helping me calm my nerves.

“What happened, sweetheart?” he asked in such a concerned voice that my heart

melted.

“Nothing, just dizzy.” I murmured as I tried to straighten myself, but he

stubbornly refused to let me go.

“Let me take you home.” He said earnestly. I shook my head as I uncurled my

hands from his shirt and raised my head out of his chest.

“I have work.” I said in a manner of protest. But as I raised my head, I was met

with his stormy gaze.

“The hell you have. I told you to take some rest, but you never listen, do you?” he

said with a hard expression.
