"Damn it, Sangwoo." You cursed, nudging him in the hip as the two of you leaned on the side of the couch. He shook his head, pulling the wool blankets closer to him. You pulled back.
"The blanket's mine. And, I never said I wanted to watch this horror movie." You jabbed him hard in the waist.
"You said you wanted to watch this one. We've done this so many times, I've lost count." He said, laughing lightly in a deep voice as he sighed. "Plus, you didn't bring any food."
"Hah, you didn't goddamn ask." You said. He shifted in his position.
"I'm watching it. I don't know if you want to, but I have pillows to muffle your screams."
"I don't fucking scream." You shook your head. The television screen flickered in your face as you adjusted to the loud music, covering your ears as you hissed.
"Damn it, I didn't study for the math test at all. I'm gonna fucking fail." You murmured, pressing your legs into your chest as you inhaled the familiar scent of the soft blankets.
"You always fail. Why did you come over, then?"
"Because I was bored."
"Lazy fucker."
"Shut your trap."
He placed an arm around your shoulder. He was wearing a worn black tank-top, something you had seen on him one too many times. You stiffened, before pushing him away. You shook your head. You glared up at the teenage boy that was wearing red facepaint.
"I don't need your help. I've survived through many, many horror movies. I even dragged you to this one horror attraction, and I didn't scream once." You said, your hands creeping up his neck as you snickered.
"I didn't scream either. But, when we watched the one that just came out a week ago, you were shivering in the bathroom." He murmured, crossing his arms as he ran his hand through his mass of thick hair.
"Okay, okay, fine. I'll watch it. But if I make one small noise, you get the privilege to draw on my face in the morning."
"Fine."
The video player began to roll, and pretty soon, you were holding back several whimpers. You clenched your fist with the blankets. He smiled, his lids fluttering as he glanced down at you. It was as if he was enjoying the gore. You didn't mind, but the audio got to your head too soon.
"Fuck, this is intense." You said under your breath, your head pressing into his arm. He looked down.
"Does that count as a noise? Do I get the prize?"
"No, you stupid ass."
"Fine. But I can get my way all the time, [Name]." He said, twirling a strand of your hair between his fingers. He tugged. You let out a small yelp, before slapping his wrist.
"That won't get you anywhere."
"Then, I dare you to finish the movie."
Your eyes widened, before you let out a cackle. You clutched your chest in a mocking way, and elbowed him again.
"Fine, fine."
"Good."
"Just know that if I fail my math test, it's your fault."
"Ah, why?"
"You've been doing some stupid voice training shit now, I just wanna show my distaste." You said, curling up in a ball as you shivered again.
His eyes widened, before his expression softened. You looked up at the tall boy, before you gave him a small smile.
"Hey, don't take it too personally. I was just joking. I'm sure it's not going to be a career or anything, it's just for fun, right?"
He snuggled up on the couch, his back lodged against two large cushions. He didn't look at you.
"Well, I don't know."
"You can tell me, we're best friends. Right? We've gone through hell together. I'm the only one that knows-"
"I seriously don't know what I'm going to do when I get out of high school, [Name]. Life is short." He cut you off, his tone sharpening as he shut his eyes. You froze, before you looked down and at the flashing screen.
"I've just been going there because I've been told I have a nice voice."
"Really? I've never heard you sing before, Sangwoo."
"Yeah, and I think I'm alright." He responded, his deep voice cracking as he rubbed his nose.
"Think about it, Sangwoo. Just know, I'll be here for you when you need it. We can watch horror movies together and prank little kids on Halloween. I'll still be the same person." You patted him on the shoulder, as you tensed up to the sound of an earsplitting scream.
"You can count on me."
"Yeah."
And the two of you spent the night like that, your trembling body pressed against his as you lost yourself in his presence.
That was the last time you were that close to Sangwoo.
He stopped returning to his apartment. He stopped answering his calls. His door was locked, and you couldn't enter his room like you always did.
Where did he go?
You didn't know.
Until you saw a tall, built man step into your class. He was wearing a thick, green jacket, and a black backpack. The professor immediately stepped aside as everyone gathered their seats. He plopped into the desk neighboring to yours as he let out a sigh.
"Ah, I can't stand math. Especially this." He moaned. Your eyes widened when your gaze landed on his face.
"W-"
He turned around to face you. Your blood went cold when he gave you a thin smile, his eyebrows arching as he looked at you.
And you felt part of your past resurface in your stomach when he let out that small laugh you knew from before. All of the questions, all of the things you needed to know. You ignored the chime of the first bell, the start of the long year of college ahead of you. He waved in front of your face as he cocked his head.
He looked so different, it almost scared you.
It gave you more chills than any horror movie would.
Was it really him?
"Who are-"
"Hey, [Name]. Long time no see."
