"Dad, mom said to come home early tonight." Zane said as he closed the door to his father's office. "I can't promise that." His father replied through the door. "Of course you can't." Zane muttered. He said his goodbyes to everyone at the hospital. His father was the head doctor here. Zane bowed to the nurses and walked to the secret emergency stairway. He had found it when he was younger and used it since. It was always empty and quiet but today Zane heard crying. He walked down the steps and saw a small boy sitting on the step, crying. "Um. Are you okay?" Zane asked. The boy jumped and turned around. He wiped his tears. "Not really. I'm sorry I thought no one came through here." The boy said. Zane looked at the boy. He was about two heads shorter than him and he had light brunette hair. "I didn't think anybody knew this was here. Do you need someone to talk to?" Zane asked. He handed him a crumpled tissue from his pocket. "I'm Zane." The boy took the tissue. "Jay. Thanks." Zane was sitting down next to Jay. "So Jay what's the problem?" Jay sniffled. "They told me I had leukemia. It's incurable. I don't have a long time left to live. I have to spend the rest of my time in this boring hospital." Zane felt sorry for the boy. "You can have your family and friends visit. Then it won't be boring." Zane said. Jay wiped his tears again. "My parents are on the other side of the earth and I don't exactly have any friends." Jay quietly said. "Then there is no other choice. I'll have to be your best friend now. But be careful you might wake up with marker on your face." Zane nudged him with his elbow and deviously smiled at him. Jay laughed. "Thanks Zane."

"Hello Zane are you here to see Jay again?" The nurse asked. Zane nodded. "Have fun. Jay has gotten more happier after you came." The nurse said. "Oh can you make sure to call me if anything happens?" He asked. She nodded. "I have your number from your father." She said. He bowed to her and ran to Jay's hospital room. Jay was sleeping peacefully, but that didn't make Zane happy. He walked over to the bed and made the scariest face he could. He poked Jay awake. "What- AHHHHH" Jay screamed and jumped. Zane fell on the floor, laughing. "That... Was.. Ahahah! Priceless!" Jay pouted. "You shouldn't scare a sick person like that." He said. Zane stopped laughing and was sitting  on the chair. "So what's up Jaydy?" Zane asked. Jay  scowled at him. "Don't call me that!" Zane smiled at him. He looked over at the nightstand and saw an open notebook. On the top it read "Things I want to do with my crush Z, before I die." He couldn't read who it was because of small handwriting. "Hey what's that?" Zane asked smiling, as he tried to grab it. Jay panicked and took the notebook and hugged it. "That's mine!" Zane  stared at him with his eyes widened. "Sorry. I didn't know." Jay sighed and closed the notebook. "Sorry that's something I wrote in private." Zane smiled. "It's fine. Anyways have you been eating your food?" Jay nodded. "Yes Zane I do eat. God you sound like my mom." He scoffed and said. Zane ruffled his hair. "Can't a guy be worried about his friend?" "Ha ha you being worried? You laughed when you saw me cry when I got a shot." Jay said. "Hey man no one cries after getting a shot." Zane chuckled and said. "You would if you were sick!" Jay replied. They spent the rest of the day bickering to each other. "It's late. I have to go home for dinner and plus I have school. See you tomorrow Jaydy" Zane said. "Don't come back if you're going to call me that." Jay crossed his arms and said. "Fine I'll call you something. Jaydy" Zane smirked and said.

Jay threw a pillow at him which Zane  caught. "See ya!" Jay waved to him. Zane stepped out and saw the nurse with Jay's dinner. He gets abalone porridge and I get leftover tofu soup. Unfair.
