Considering that second stage was made in 1999, it looks good for something that looks like 2005 or something.
First stage was made in 1998, and it had the animation style of the manga.
Second stage had a different, sharp HD art style; basically it doesn't follow the original manga art that well.
The CG however, has been VASTLY improved!!! Go watch the first episodes of each season and you'll see which one is better.

Initial D is one of the best anime because it has EPIC EUROBEAT and EPIC CARS!!!!
