Crickets jumped in the grass beside him as Tyler moved. His shoes added muffled thumps on the pavement under the yellowed rays from the street lamps to the nighttime music. He was utterly alone under the stars and moon, walking in the cool darkness of the silent neighborhood. Houses loomed beside him, and his shadow followed him loyally around every turn.

He walked this path most nights, sleeping wasn't easy for him. His mind wandered into places he didn't want it to. These walks let him think about the sky and stars and night sounds, melodies he couldn't wait to bend into intricate songs. Music flew through his head and floated around him like invisible tides in a never ending ocean, pulling him towards different lyrics, ebbing away from his usual nocturnal slumps.

He sighed quietly, listening to the sounds of crickets and trembling trees recede. The sky was just beginning to turn a dawny grey and the sun began to peak above the Columbus skyline as he stepped into the alcove above his front door.  He always left it slightly ajar when he went on his walks. His neighborhood was safe, and he never strayed too far from his home.

He slipped his slender frame through the crack in the door, being as silent as possible to ensure that he didn't wake his parents; they hated his nightly walks. He slipped off his sneakers and padded up the stairs into his small room on socked feet. He undressed, taking off the clothes dirtied with his daytime and nighttime activities, and ending up in just his boxers. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, sitting heavily on the edge of his bed. His room was just beginning to be painted with the greys and dusty blues of dawn as he pulled the thin sheet of his bed up to his chin. He listened to the birds begin to wake up accompanied the other dawn music he had become accustomed to in his small neighborhood. He could account for every noise as his eyes drifted closed, allowed no time for his brain to wander. Every noise, that is, except for the low grumbling moving steadily down the road.
