Every human is said to be made out of
the same simple ingredients
DNA, proteins, lipids, and a thousand more chemicals
we are barely beginning to understand.
But we are made out of more than that
We are made out of survivors
Survivors of oppression and poverty,
people who refused to let themselves be put down
even when others wanted to dehumanize them
Survivors who fought the manipulation
of those who saw dollar signs in the cost of their lives
We are made out of survivors
Survivors of terror and genocide
whose homes were destroyed in raids
who lost families and friends in war
who fought tooth and nail
for every breath
We are made out of survivors
Of warriors in the battlefield,
screaming their familys' name,
while hoping to see those people again
Of warriors at the home
who comforted the ones gripped by terror
who were attacked and spit on
who were forced to do things that made their soul sick
We are made out of survivors
Of people who had minds that hurt them
Of revolutionaries that fought for needed change
Of farmers and housewives that fought for their right to live
Of intellectuals dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge
Of illiterates dedicated to their children's survival
Our DNA etched to make beautiful humans
with the same precision sculptors used to capture nature's beauty
Made through miracles and strength
We are all made to be miracles and survivors
because it is in our DNA
