"You need to get over her."

"Seriously. This is getting ridiculous."

"Elle, you're only in high school anyway. She graduated last year."

Elle sat in a wave of noise as her misunderstanding friends drilled their saddening saddening saddening words into her frail and fragile eardrums.

She was in love with a girl. A girl named Josephine. She had been in love with her for over two years. Elle always sat in the back-row bleachers of this unrequited love. Watching the game, full of hope, but knowing better. Knowing a loss was inevitable, but nevertheless feeling the sting when the game was over.

The same game that played everyday always stung in the end.

"I can't believe you lied to us. You said you were over her. You're being melodramatic."

Elle looked up into the brisk, sandpaper eyes of the girl she sat across from, and broke her silence.

"Yeah, you guys are right." It was barely a breath of a whisper.

She felt her own hollow words betray her heart, thrust a jagged ice pick into its arteries, and let the remaining light flow out into the dry air.

"We are- are you about to cry, Elle? Elle-"

Elle got up and left.

She drove around her home town until the sun tucked itself away, the open sky darkened, and the streetlights feigned an abundance of stars scattered across the architecture of the city.

The distant suns in the sky guided her to a girl's house.

Elle's legs and feet took her halfway to the house. An eternity stood still as the concept of time faded as she stood in front of the house.

Go up to the door. Go back home. Tell her. Never tell her.  Elle's thoughts tore through her tender mind.

The front door opened as she stood in the walkway halfway to the house. A girl walked out the door, down the stairs, and up to Elle.

They held each other's eyes. The girl gently held Elle's face. She poured poured poured warmth into Elle through the broken windows of her soul.

The moon and sun collided, the stars exploded, and the sky melted. The girl kissed Elle.

Not any girl; a girl named Josephine.
