A pull on the horse's reins
Among a field of the slain;
By my hand, I've earned stains,
Untouched by the rain.
How strong the tears of heaven,
How fierce the sword in hand;
How each a line within vision,
All of which tell no reason.
Why, my people, do pray tell?
Why have we wrought this hell?
Why are our own kin felled;
Why to the devil, our souls we sell?
Eyes on the blades; eyes on me,
Gazes of the dying burn dully.
Blood is all I see; all heard agony
And I thought: this is felony.
Robbed of our lives, robbed of our years!
The words above us must we hear.
Yet, between you and I, in this field of fear,
At a moment, any could be the deer.
A tug at our armor, a hue and a cry!
Among the many that has failed,
By our hand, we tell a tale
That ought not ever be hailed!
For our blood tells of the pain,
The tears tell of our losing bargain;
Our sweat tells us 'tis all in vain;
And to think this victory could only be insane.
