"Teams" can be decided by the players, the DM, or by a D4.
If the players decide, the DM should make sure that they are choosing based on the player and not on the character.
If the DM decides, the DM can do whatever they want because they're the DM.
If the teams are chosen by the D4, then whatever happens happens or, if the DM wants they can make an executive decision to change the "teams."
In all three cases, a D4 should be used to determine which entrance is used: 1=West, 2=North, 3=East, 4=South.
