I woke up due to the smell of smoke. it was everywhere, surrounding me, seeming to trap me inside my room. I jumped out of bed, knowing something was terribly wrong. as I approached my door, I recalled something I was taught in school. I pressed the back of my hand to the door. hot, VERY hot.
"OK, so no going that way...." I mumbled to myself, worried sick about the rest of my family. I jumped back to my bed, and quickly woke up my little sister, angel. she always sleeps in my room, right by my side. I guess she likes me the most in my family, she's my favorite too.
"maaaahhhhh.... lemme sleep sissy." she said in her cute little voice. she was only five. I wanted to let her sleep, but this was a very serious matter.
"wake up pumpkin, we need to get out of the house." I say, trying not to let my fear show.
"why?? are we playing a game?!" she asked suddenly sitting up, due to excitement.
"ummmm... yes! it's a game.... called safely get out of the house! yes!"
"hehe.... that's a funny name, Trixy."
" yea I know, but it's a really fun game, now follow me, and you have to be suuuuuuper careful, or else you'll lose the game OK?"
"hehe! OK!"
The smoke was getting thicker, we needed to get out NOW. I claimed over my bed, and opened the screen-less window.
"though here!"
"but why can't we just go through the door?" Angel questioned, pointing.
"because silly, then it would be to easy!" I climb out onto the ledge, then call out to Angel.
"hey, pumpkin, now carefully, come out to, i'll be here if you get scared."
"NEVER!" she yelled and determinedly made her way to me. I looked around, wondering where the heck the firemen were.
"ok, ok. be careful! now, follow me to your brother's window." we head across the roof, stepping quietly.
*Crap! the window can't open from the outside!
"hey, Angel, stay here a moment, I'll be right back. don't move, okay?"
"yes sissy." and I head back to my room. when I get there, the flames were already steadily creeping towards the bed. I leaped form my bed, to the top of my desk, where I got out a knife I had, for a project in school. I leaped back to my bed, just as the fire reached the bottom of my bed. I close my window, making sure that the flames can't get more oxygen, and turn back to my sister.
"hey, stand behind me, and close your eyes, your going to hear glass breaking, but it will be fine, OK?"
"why are you going to break bro-bro's window?" she asks, finally realizing this is NOT a game.
"OK honey, there is a fire, in our house, so we had to get out, but don't worry, we're going to get Obi out of there."
she nods, obviously scared, and trying to hide it. I usher her behind me and slam the knife into the window, cracking it. I do it again, only harder. the window shatters, thankfully, not hitting me or Angel.
"the fu-" Obi shouts, practically leaping from his bed.
"haha! it's just us, Obi, but we need you to get out her ASAP!"
"Why?"
" do you not smell that?? there's a FIRE get your butt out here!"
"OK, OK! Wait, fire?!" he says suddenly alarmed. he is 4 months younger than me, making him the middle child. I nod feverishly.
"come on! we NEED to go!"
"W-What about mum and da?"
"there not here, remember? they left for they're earlier, at like ten, NOW GET OVER HERE!" I yell, we need to get out of here. he scrambles over the broken glass, and out onto the roof.
"OK, follow me, there should be a tree over here.... we need to climb down it and get out of here." we walk to the corner of the roof, where a tall oak tree sits.
"Obi, you go first. I'll hand Angel to you then come down myself." he nods his agreement and starts to climb down, once he does I slowly lower Angel to him. then I climb down, my questing feet finding footholds. we go to the edge of the yard and look back at the damage. by this time my room was burning down, and obi's was starting to go down with the flames.
I sigh then say; " OK we need to find a place to stay.... and why aren't the firemen here?"
"your right this is weird..." Obi agrees.
"sissy, bro-bro... w-what are we going t-to do?" as she ends her sentence she starts to cry.
"hey...hey, it'll be ok. it'll be fine. Ooh! I know why don't we go to that one hotel? the one with the peppermints you like so much in the rooms?" I say, trying to cheer her up.
" t-that would be n-nice." she says, still sniffling.
"yeah, but one problem, where are we going to get the money?" Obi asks.
I flash a devious smile, and head to the neighboring playground. I head to a hidden spot, by a few trees, Obi and Angel following close behind, curious to see what I had hidden away. I turn suddenly, kneeling by a fake poison Ivy bush, i put there to serve my own ends. I moved it aside, under it was a larger rock. I picked it up and put it nearby. there was a hole in the ground with money in it A LOT of money. Obi gave a low whistle and angel just stared in disbelief.
"how much is that?" Obi said, shocked.
I shrugged and said; "about........ 1,000?"
"whoa." his eyes widened.
"yeah."
just then Angel stared jumping up and down, in circles and screaming "we're rich!!"
Obi moved to cover her mouth.
"shhhhh! people don't need to know! now, Trix, where did you get this?!"
"well I have a job, ya know. this is all the money I saved up, i didn't want one of you to find it and take it, so I hid it here. now lets go to that hotel." I picked up Angel and we got to the hotel just as the sun was rising.
