I grew up in a society where your status was based on the number that you had. When you are 15 years old in Brightham you get a number on your wrist. The number represented how many times that you get to live. If you die then you can come back and live another day. The one highest number was 579, my grandmother had gotten that number and she was named the town mayor. The higher the number that you get than that gives you to be the higher the status that you get in the community to help shape us for future generations. Future duties and living up to our standards Blah, Blah, Blah.

My family has been harboring a secret that could possibly change the way that our world is built. I was at home when mine appeared, but it wasn't a number it was an infinity sign. There had never been an infinity sign there was always a number why didn't I get a number. Was there something wrong with me I didn't think that there was something wrong. I am now 16 and today is the day we get our job assigned to us. We have to show the council of elders our number and then they give us our job in order to help society. "Trinity it's time to go!" my mom yelled from the top of the stairs. "Ok, mom I'll be up in a minute," I said as I walked up the stairs to see my mom and dad waiting for me arms crossed over their chests.

The look on their faces let me know that they didn't like that I had chosen to go today instead for tomorrow. I wanted to get this over with, I didn't even care that I might not even make the cut. "What?" I snarled, which got me a very icy glare from mom and an odd questionable look from dad. "Young lady doesn't use that tone with me, I'm your mother do you remember the one who pays for your food, clothes, and shelter." She said like she just won that and every other fight. "Yes mom I won't do it again." she made a little sound of triumph. We got into the car to take the 15-mile drive to the council headquarters. There was nothing to do in the car so I looked out the window.

The trees were their normal bright green like a lush green bush. The rivers were clear as a crystal and the sun reflecting the water made it sparkle. I just loved all the colors in the world and someday I'm going to visit the-. My thought was cut off by the sound of our tires hitting the gravel. I looked to see the massive building with large marble pillars on the steps. There were golden vines creeping up the sides of the pillars and up the side of the building. This was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I stepped out of the car and there were 4 figures at the top of the stairs, as we got closer we saw that it was three male council members, three female council members, and my grandmother the president.

The second we hit the top step my grandmother gave me one of her famous hugs. It had been too long the last time that I saw my grandmother, she gave me a hug 1 year ago and she whispered in my ear to be safe and watch out for my mother and father. I was confused but, I looked into her bright emerald eyes. A council member cleared their throat to let us know we should stop hugging. I looked into my grandmother's eyes for what may be the last time and I saw that they weren't as bright.

The other council members opened the massive mahogany doors with silver and gold wolves all around the edges of the door. I stepped in cautiously, my parents very lightly nudged me into the long hallway. I saw my friends Briar, Haily, Cerise, and Raven, I waved them over. My parents went down the hallway that read Parents/Guardians in gold cursive. What is it with place and gold come on people don't they know that there are any other colors. "Hey, Trinity how's it going?" said Cerise in her husky voice that almost sounded like if a wolf could talk. "Well, my parents were not thrilled for the entire town watching me get my job because of my Number."

Her dark brown hair with the white stripe was swishing like a chocolate waterfall with a white chocolate drizzle. We were all in our best clothes, Briar in her pink dress that cut off at her knees and trailed in the back of it with pink rosebuds. Haily was dressed in a black silk dress that fit like a glove around her waist and hips with diamonds flowing down to look like stars. Raven was dressed in a purple and black dress that was fitted to her knees and then it poofed out down to the floor. Cerise was dressed in a blood red and midnight black empire waist dress that flowed from her waist in red silk with black lace that made the shape of a wolf howling.

Cerise had always been the most animal-like of all of us always helping animals and was always playing with the wolf pup she had saved. Briar was the flower-nature girl she had made sure that each and every one of our teachers had a plant to help the earth.Haily had always been the happy-peppy one making sure that we never had a frown on our face. Raven had been the dark one she was Haily's opposite in every way she was always in the shadows being scary. I was the fashionista of us all always making our clothes like our dresses today, I made them with my own hands the wolf was the hardest to do to get the face and the position right. "Trinity Brightham," said a husky voice from my left.

I turned to see Cerise's older sister Ramona. "Oh, Ramona I thought that they didn't allow animals in the choosing ceremony?" she glared at me and, we both started laughing. "Oh, Ramona you are like the sister I wished that I had." I really meant that she practically raised me. I ran over and gave her a big hug "Oh, Trinity honey it has been too long. How are you doing with the..." She didn't have to finish her sentence to know what she was talking about. Ramona, Cerise, and my parents were the only ones who knew about my number. "Hey, let's keep that on the DL."

"No, I shouldn't have brought it up any-" She was interrupted by the ceremony bell. We all got to our places leaving Ramon to go to her seats. The ceremony hall was huge, it had 20 pillars with gold vines that crawled up from the floor. The seats were red velvet and there was a large red carpet that led up to the stage that had a large podium that was a deep red color with our emblem. A wolf that was howling at a golden moon. I took my seat next Cerise and prayed for the best. " Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I am Milton Gorn these are my colleagues, Marie Antienum he said pointing to the red haired lady with the black dress. Marissa Common he pointed to Cerise grandmother. Marci Fowl he pointed to the man on his left. And last but not least Ashlyn Brightham he pointed to my grandmother. Her eyes met mine and once again they were the beautiful emerald color.

"Now give a round of applause to Ashlyn Brightham." The entire crowd erupts in applause and cheers. They loved my grandmother, she made sure that everyone got to have their voice heard and she tried to help anyone make their wish come true. The poorer of us praised her and the rich envied her and the middle class treated him like an equal. Some of the grandparents in the crowd had grown up with my grandmother, befriended her, talked to her, and love her. She was an inspiration for all of us young and old-.

"And that is why you mean the world to me," oops I zoned out my grandmother's biggest speech, "and I can't wait to see if my granddaughter will be the next influence of our future." my grandmother looks at me with glint of pride in her eyes as a spotlight lands on me. I stand up and wave at the crowd, the parents and grandparents cheer while my fellow classmates looked at me with fire in their eyes.

My classmates had always been jealous of me because I was the granddaughter of the president. They thought that they should get the spotlight because when she visits us she would take me out of school to go to meetings and appearances with her. They thought that they should be in the spotlight but, I don't like the spotlight. I loved spending time with my grandmother, not with a bunch of press asking me questions.

"I would like to thank you all, you have helped me become the person you see standing before you. I would like to also thank my granddaughter Trinity-"

I hear a gunshot and screams more gunshots ring out in the ceremony room. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the security guards bringing my grandmother off the stage. I turn to see my parents running towards me I was about to wave them over when I see my dad fall. I run over to him when I see a crimson spot growing on his chest, his glassy eyes are looking up at the ceiling looking but not seeing.

I feel the tears rising in my eyes when I feel a hand grab me and carry me out the door, I see Ramona right before the world goes black. "When she wakes up she is going to want to see her mom Ramona." I heard a muffled voice from behind the door of my room. "Well, maybe she won't want to see her. Have you thought of that Cerise." I got out of bed only to fall to my knees. I see Cerise running towards me when I hit the floor.

I was in the dining table with my mom, my dad, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles, and my cousins as we eat. Cheddar brats and crinkle fries fill the room with sweet and savory smells.
