Some might call it fate, some might even call it destiny but to them it was nothing but love, love at first sight. On that very day, he was walking home after a tired day at school and she was walking to the cafe down the street. Just as she looked up, she caught his eyes and it felt like the world finally made sense, as cliche as it sounds, butterflies erupted in their stomachs and at that moment, they both knew it was meant to be. They looked at each other and smiled bashfully.

On that very same day, a year later, they celebrated their sixth month anniversary. They took things slow, as they knew they had forever ahead of them. She took the time to know him and all of his likes, dislikes and hopes, he took the time to know her and all of her flaws, dreams and insecurities. She's beautiful but she'll never admit it, he's worth it, but he'll never accept that. He thinks she's the most beautiful girl in the world and to her, she never wants to be with anyone else. He bought her a big creamy cake, she always wanted to have a cake fight. They looked at each other and smiled playfully.

Another year passed and they were happy, everything was perfect. They understood each other, shared their dreams, hopes and ambitions. To him, she was The One. Her hands fit in his like it was meant to be, she smelled like vanilla even though she never wore perfume and to him, that was his favorite smell in the whole wide world. To her, he was her soul mate, her other half, he knew her like the back of his hands and sometimes they even finished each other's sentences and to her, that was love. She hugged him out of impulse, he hugged her back. They looked at each other and smiled flirtatiously.

Another year has gone and come around, they were sitting at their favorite spot in town trying to grasp at whatever's left of their relationship. You might think they fell out of love but you're wrong they still love each other with every fibre of their being. What's wrong you may ask? The fact that they couldn't bear the thought of losing each other. They couldn't comprehended how their life solely depended on one person who might one day change and leave and as much as they believed and love each other, it wasn't enough. They knew what was best for them. They looked at each other and smiled but it never reached their eyes.

And like fate, they walked past each other like they had so many years ago. He caught a whiff of  what used to be his favorite smell in the world, and she, she saw how the boy of only nineteen when they had met had grown into a man. Nine years ago they were hopeless romantics who dreamed of meeting someone who would for the first time, stick around when it seemed like nobody ever did. Now, they had finally grown to understand that sometimes even the truest of true love couldn't sustain a relationship. And this time around, both wearing jewel encrusted bands on their ring finger, they finally understood that when you really love someone, you'll let them go, because maybe they'll be happier with someone else. They never loved each other any lesser than they did those many years ago, but they've learned to love again. He turned back just as she did. They looked at each other and smiled a smile of understanding and best wishes.
