“What the hell, Paul? Why would you make the graphics that dark, this is a comic after all?”

“Sorry, Syd, I didn’t mean to but the damn program is acting up. I will fix it as soon as I can.”

“You better or I will take it out of your ass!” She said with a little humor around it.

Sydney was always making everyone’s life around her a living hell. Maybe it’s because she was a perfectionist, or maybe because this particular comic in question is her “baby” and she wants everything to go without a hitch.

She began working at Warner Comics when she was twenty-one and in her last year of college. She was supposed to just be an intern learning more about the graphic art business, but the owner was so impressed with her knowledge of comic book history and her editing skills that he offered her a job about two months in. For Sydney this was an opportunity of a lifetime. One she thought would provide her with the necessary skills to eventually be able to create her own comic book series and a character that would, for years to come, be the hero of children everywhere. She has been working at Warner for the past five years and she is finally launching her very first graphic novel, “The Adventures of Captain Awesome”.  She is the youngest woman to ever do so, and she is going to live up to the expectations if it kills her.

She’s been a comic book nut since she was five years old and her grandfather first introduced her to The Justice League.  Batman being her favorite character of course, because he has all the great toys. She would visit him once a month and they would explore the world of super heroes and get lost for hours. It was then that she developed an affinity for super heroes and the whole fantasy world graphic novels provide. The characters are larger than life and conquer things that would send most human beings running for the hills. She appreciated that most characters were born from some sort of conflict or struggle, which led them to be the protectors of all that’s good in the world and become the heroes people have come to love.

Sydney James grew up in rural Pennsylvania and rarely ever ventured to the big city, well at least until college. She was raised by her mother, Beth and father, Kenneth and has a younger sister, Emily who was as completely opposite from Sydney as one could possibly get. Sydney loved comic books, sports and playing with the boys, but Emily, who is two years younger, was totally prissy, played with Barbie dolls and would never let herself get dirty, which made living on a farm most difficult. They had one thing in common; however, which was to get out of their small town as soon as possible and college afforded them that opportunity.

Sydney wanted to go to school in New York City which has changed her for the better, giving the push she needed to successfully plant herself in the mecca of comic book land and she is happier than ever. She developed a stern head for business, the ability to communicate with anyone, and the drive to get exactly whatever she wanted. Right now she wants her “baby” to be perfect and ready to print within the next three months, so this mess up with Paul puts her completely off schedule and she definitely can’t have that.

“Syd just give me until this afternoon and I promise everything will be perfect.” He said reassuringly.

“Now that’s what I like to hear.” She smiled widely showing her appreciation for his attention to the matter.

Paul exited Sydney’s office and headed up the hallway. Sydney was on her computer putting the finishing touches on the dialogue for the first edition. Her office is like any other ordinary office, equipped with a desk, chair, phone and computer. Her desk faces the door. There is a bookshelf to the right of her desk and a small file cabinet on the left. There is a large window directly behind her desk which gives the room an extraordinary amount of natural light, more than the other offices in the building. There is also a small window next to the door that looks out on the hallway and other offices.
