In books full of gore, death and other horrible things, comedy doesn't seem to fit in well. But comedy can act in your favour when writing a horror book, as it acts as comic relief. This breaks the tension in the book, which allows the reader to rest for a while and then the tension can be built up again.

Comedy can be applied in most situations in horror books, and most writers use dialogue to be humorous. To do this effectively, I recommend making your character quite sarcastic from the start or prone to making joke so their humour doesn't appear forced. Comedic lines can be mocking of the situation your character finds themselves in, or at the expense of the villain/good guy of the story.

Comedy can also be applied in situations, and having ironic things happen will always make the reader smile even in the most tense of situations. Basic physical comedy could be things such as running into things, getting trapped inside rooms etc.

Adding a little comedy into your horror story will add something else to the reading experience that the reader will appreciate.
