"Average"

I woke up to the sound of my Aunt's parrot screeching and I fumbled for my glasses. I was late..again. I rolled out of bed and ran my hands through my hair. "Good morning you little shit," I mumbled as I passed the bird's cage and walked to the kitchen.

I poured myself some cereal and sat on the couch next to my Aunt, who had fallen asleep with the news on. I began to flip the channel but I noticed that there were school dismissals all across the state.

It's the middle of April, we couldn't be out for snow, I thought, but it turned out there's a virus of some kind going around. I reassured myself, probably the flu. I watched for my county, which wasn't there, and finished my cereal.

I went back to my room and got ready, getting dressed and dotting concealer on my face to cover up my terrible acne. I got made fun of for being "girly" sometimes, but it's better than being made fun of for acne.

I quickly brushed my teeth and grabbed my stuff before heading out. I ran outside and started my Mustang. Well, it wasn't mine, but I drove it more than anyone so I called it mine.

I pulled into the school parking lot and ran into the building, hoping my 3rd period teacher was out today. Mr. Patterson was a dick, to put it simply, and I've learned practically nothing in his class. An easy A, but I didn't feel like I actually earned it...if that makes any sense. It's weird being in a high school class that isn't challenging...

School dragged on as per usual and I finished most of my homework during lunch. Nothing weird had happened, except that the cafeteria was quieter because of all the absences. Teachers insisted we stay sanitary, as if they expected us to avoid each other and constantly sanitize our hands. I'm pretty sure that wasn't going to affect anything, there were still couples making out in the halls and people going to the bathroom without thinking about washing their hands... Normally, this would disgust me, but going to this place for 3 years teaches you some things.

After school, I met up with a couple of my friends (including Matt, whom I had a secret crush on) at the local mall. We did what any other group of teens would do at the mall, walk aimlessly around the food court and Hot Topic until time to head home.

"Hey, El" Matt said, "can we talk for a bit?" I tensed up when I heard my name, but I turned and answered him, "Sure, what's up?" and he led me to a table in the relatively quiet food court. "I.....I have something to tell you.." he said, rubbing his neck. I leaned forward, giving him my full attention. "I'm bi," he blurted out, and I was shocked, trying to decide wether or not to come out to him too.

He quickly stood up, his face completely red, and went back to our cluster of friends, who were waiting in line at Chick-Fil-A. I followed hesitantly, and pulled out my phone to distract myself and avoid awkward conversation.

Did I really think I had an actual message? These were the only friends I had, and heck, we only hung out once a week when none of us have practice or anything. I couldn't complain, though, I'd known Katherine and Wesley since 3rd grade, and Matt and I both play Baritone, so we were all somewhat close.

Today was an average day. Average gay kid with average grades in average classes. I can't say much, it's hard to stand out in a school of obnoxious teenagers, especially if you sometimes don't want to stand out.

I was glad to have a normal day, but I had absolutely no idea what tomorrow would hold, and there was nothing I could do about that. With that thought, I walked in and flung my backpack on the floor, did my usual browse through the media, and fell asleep.
