"I loved you then, and I love you now. You are my one and only."
~Claire
Those were the last words she had ever said to me, and I wrote them down, to always have them with me.
As she took her last breath, I whispered in her ear, "I love you, Claire." Since that day, she's all I've ever thought about, day and night. She passed away five months ago in a terrible accident.
She was driving down a twisty road on the side of a mountain, listening to "Tell her you love her" by Echosmith, her favourite song. It was raining and the roads were slippery, but so far she hadn't had any problems. She was halfway down, when lightning struck right in front of her. She veered out of the way, but her tires slipped and her car went flying off the edge of the mountain.
She was rushed to the nearest hospital and was put on life support. She had broken almost everything in her body. The doctor said she wouldn't make it through the night, so I stayed with her. I didn't sleep at all that night, and I'm glad I didn't. She woke up for a faint moment and told me those few words that I will always remember, "I loved you then and I love you now. You are my one and only." Tears fell as we said our last goodbyes.
I heard the high-pitched beep of the heart monitor as it went flat. The nurse came in to unplug her, and I sat by her bed in tears until I was told I had to leave. I drove home, holding back tears, as I listened to "Tell her you love her" by Echosmith.
