Unbreakable

Please stop staring

Cryptic, encoded—the words on your mind

Inked to your skin.

Unbreakable,

a thin, red string

like blood on my wrist

And a smile of knowing.

All I wanted was to be beautiful

Here on the pavement, bleeding yellow

I scarce believed it, and wonder still

What’s the punch line?

When do I stop bracing for impact?

I have found terminal velocity

But I can see headstones.

Can I stop taking truth for lies?

Words, of my own persuasion

Are the walls of my own making.

How long until I surrender

To the song as soft as sin?

You do me in.
