Excess

We live in a country of excess,
Where bigger is better,
Where more is never enough,
Where fad diets fade,
And extremes are normal,
Where healthy is never good enough,
Where the rich are poorer,
And wealth is handed to the poor,
Where true worth is forgotten,
Unless the price tag matches.

The rat race is never won,
Yet the only way you're judged,
Working past the breaking point,
Chasing other people's dreams,
Keeping up with the Jones's
And hating every minute,
Wanting happiness 'As Seen on TV'.

We fight for our freedoms,
Yet never are we truly free,
Chaining ourselves with arrogance,
Trapping ourselves with ignorance,
Holding on to outsiders beliefs,
Fighting for what's right,
But never for ourselves,
And when we do, how selfish!

Make your mark,
Yet stay inside the lines,
Your beautiful,
Only if you match our description,
No child left behind,
Only works for those on the ends of the spectrum,
Your in the middle, your screwed,
Just like the lower middle class,
Too rich for assistance,
Too poor to not need it.

We give up our freedom,
Not to a government,
But to mass media,
Social media,
Public opinion,
Parental opinion,
Peer pressure,
Addictions,
Stereo types.

We forget,
How to think,
How to feel,
How to live our own lives,
Handing our life reigns over to anyone who wants them.
Abusing ourselves for our uniqueness,
Unhappy with our triumphs,
Seeking external problems,
Ignoring the internal.

It's time for change,
But we fear it,
Time for strength,
But we don't see it,
Time for love,
But we don't know it,
Time for peace,
But we fight it.
