Bitten

Perhaps the poor child has seen better days than the day she was lonely and alone in the snow, wearing a brown coat over her as if it actually helped with getting warm. She was cold on the inside too. She was crying dry tears that had no shine whatsoever. The burial lasted not too long because of the weather, but she wanted to stay longer... If only she could go back home alone, but the person who was just buried was her only home.

Home is where the dear ones are.

She clutched once again onto the colorful ball that was in her tiny hands, and held dearly onto it, as it was the last thing he left behind, beside her. The little girl took the ball to her lips and kissed it; it was surprisingly warm, just like his smile used to be.

Her tears suddenly were meaningful and she let them flow and flow until she had no more, accompanied by sobs and sighs and the broken memories of her dear father.

She wanted revenge, and she was going to get it.

The girl looked at the pebble that was in her hands and bit it. Strangely enough, she could bite through it, even though it was made out of stone. She spat the piece she just bit and took it in her other hand. The small part lost its color and became gray.

Oh no, she broke it!

The little girl tried to stick it back together, spitting on it or rubbing it and chanting but, no matter what she did, it just wouldn't be repaired... She let out bitter tears this time for having broken the very last memory of him.

She gulped and looked at the majestic, gray grave once more.

"Father, please, use your last bit of magic that you have in there, and repair it... for me?"

But there was no response. Only snow and the wind in the covered fir trees could be heard, besides her puffy breathing.  She kneeled for she was alone in this vast and gray world.

Though, as her tears landed on the broken pebble, it shined.

The little girl looked curiously at it and understood... she understood that that was the last bit of magic her father left behind. Her tears reached the little stone that her father used to say that 'will guard' her. She never understood how a colorful ball could protect her, so she never gave it much thought. But now she understood... That ball was going to protect her.

The tears slowly came to a halt as she watched the little ball shine brighter and brighter, melting the snow around it and making the grass underneath green again and mushrooms and flowers bloom. A blue butterfly landed on the little forget-me-not flower that had just appeared and let its black gloss envelop the small plant with glitter powder.

The little girl was amazed by the power of the stone, so she decided to repair it at all costs, and make the gray part colorful again.

As soon as she thought that, the gray bit of the stone that was next to it shined also, but it didn't do anything.
